The big three
Astrologers usually read three placements first. Together they are a short portrait: how you see yourself, what you need, and the manner you bring to a room.
Sun sign
Who you are at the core
Set by the Sun's position on your birth date. Astrologers read it as identity and sense of purpose. It changes about once a month, so it is the sign most people already know.

Moon sign
What you need
Set by the Moon's position, which changes sign about every 2.3 days. Traditionally read as emotional needs and what comforts you. Your date and place are usually enough.

Rising sign
How you come across
The sign on the eastern horizon at your birth time and place, also called the Ascendant. It changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time.

How these charts are calculated
Planet positions come from an astronomical ephemeris accurate to about one arcminute, and we tested the results against the Swiss Ephemeris and NASA's JPL Horizons on charts from 1879 to 2024, in both hemispheres. The birth time is converted to Universal Time with the historical time zone rules of your birthplace, including daylight saving and wartime changes, and local mean time before standard time existed. Signs use the tropical zodiac; houses default to Placidus. Every choice is written up on our methodology page.
What to read next
If the chart is new to you, start with how to read a birth chart, then the twelve houses. To compare two charts, the guide to synastry explains the aspects and overlays before you open the calculator. On the numerology side, the numerology calculator reads the same birth date as your Sun sign.
Questions people ask
Your big three are your Sun sign, your Moon sign and your rising sign. The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from your date and place, and the rising sign from your exact birth time and place. The Sun, Moon and rising calculator gives all three at once and says what each one means.
Enter your birth date, time and place into the birth chart calculator. It computes every planet's position from an astronomical ephemeris, applies the historical time zone of your birthplace, and draws the wheel with houses and aspects. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored.
A birth chart is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets stood, seen from your birthplace, at the moment you were born. Astrologers read each placement as a description: the Sun as identity, the Moon as emotional needs, the rising sign as outward manner, and every other planet in its sign and house as a different area of life. We offer those readings for reflection and entertainment, not as predictions.
You need your birth date and place, and sometimes your birth time. The Moon spends about 2.3 days in each sign, so on most dates the date alone settles it. On the days it changed sign, the Moon sign calculator shows both signs and the local time of the change so you can tell which is yours.
By hand you convert your birth time to Universal Time, work out the local sidereal time for your longitude, then use your latitude and the obliquity of the ecliptic to find the degree of the zodiac rising in the east. It is several pages of trigonometry, which is why astrologers used tables of houses. Our rising sign calculator does the same computation and shows the offset and sidereal time it used.
Calculate both birth charts, then compare every planet in one chart with every planet in the other, noting the aspects (angles) between them and where each person's planets fall in the other's houses. The synastry chart calculator does this and draws a bi-wheel; our guide to synastry explains how astrologers read the result.
Find where Saturn stood in your birth chart, then find the dates it comes back to that exact degree, about 29.4 years later and again around 59. Because Saturn turns retrograde, the return often has three passes. The Saturn return calculator lists every pass with its date.
The North Node is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path heading north. It is not a planet but a calculated point, and astrologers traditionally read it as a direction of growth, with the South Node opposite as familiar ground. The North Node calculator gives both the mean and the true node.
