10th House in Astrology: Vocation, Reputation, Midheaven

The 10th house in astrology: its link to the Midheaven, what Sepharial and Alan Leo listed, how astrologers read it now, and our own figures for the house.

Last updated September 30, 2026

The 10th house sits at the top of a birth chart, and in the systems most people use it begins at the Midheaven, the highest point the zodiac reaches. Astrologers read it for the part of life that is seen from outside: vocation, standing and the role a person takes in a wider group. We look at where it sits, what two early authors set down, what guides say today and how rarely or often it is empty in our own sample. All of it is offered as tradition.

Where the 10th house sits: the top of the chart

Closing the angular group, the 10th house echoes Capricorn, the tenth sign. That house-and-sign numbering is behind Alan Leo’s 1903 remark to “pay special attention to the corresponding house”. The houses guide already explains the groups and the systems.

Several guides place the house at the peak of the wheel. Astrostyle calls it the most ascended point, Astrology Zone puts it where the 12 would be on a clock face, and Numerologist.com says it is where the Sun reaches its highest elevation. In quadrant systems the Midheaven is the edge of the house, and our Midheaven guide covers the point itself. In Whole Sign houses they can part company, as the numbers below show.

Wikipedia’s list of houses gives the old Latin name as Regnum, glossed as Kingdom, and summarizes the house as career, public reputation and social status. It also records how modern authors frame it: Houlding stresses its traditional role in representing authority figures and social standing, and Rudhyar sees it as personal development expressed in the public sphere.

What Sepharial and Alan Leo listed

Sepharial’s 1910 book Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope sets the tenth house over “position, honour and fame”, and his list continues with a parent and with superiors of every rank. Alan Leo, in How to Judge a Nativity in 1903, gives it “Profession, business ability, fame, honour and material reputation”. Both are describing standing in the eyes of others, and the words are the same ones modern guides use with less ceremony: reputation, status and the role a person holds.

One guide notes that astrologers do not agree on which parent the house stands for: some traditions assign the mother and others the father. It is a reminder that older lists differ from one another, and that modern readers pick among them.

Standing, authority and the tenth sign in modern guides

Reputation, status and what a person is known for

Guides widely describe the 10th house as the house of public standing. Astrostyle says it rules the things a person is known for, including career choices, social status and prestige. Astrology Zone speaks of contribution to the world and the heights reached in a career. Astrology.com calls it the House of Social Status and lists vocation, ambition and organizations that hold authority. Numerologist.com reads it as a person’s place in the larger social order and warns that calling it the career house sells it short.

Authority and leadership

A second theme is authority, in both directions. Astrostyle says to study the house for clues about leadership style, and Astrology Zone lists a leadership style too. Astrology.com mentions employers and organizations with power over us. Numerologist.com describes the house as a person’s relationship with authority, the authority they carry, the authority they submit to and the early experiences behind both. These are descriptions of what the house is read for, not judgments about any career or any person’s standing.

Saturn and Capricorn

Guides widely pair the house with Capricorn and Saturn. Numerologist.com adds that the modern equation is one lens and that the older view was broader, and it ties the original royal house to the Sun’s highest point. Traditions differ, so we state the pairing and do not settle it.

Above the 4th house

Below it, across the wheel, is the 4th. One guide says it sits directly across the chart, hidden at the bottom, and treats the two as an axis, the private and the public. The 4th house page covers the private end.

A planet at the top of the chart

Traditionally, astrologers treat planets in the angular houses as the most prominent in a chart, and a planet here is often described as visible in a person’s public role. That describes emphasis, not fate, and nothing here ranks a planet.

Our numbers: a vacant 10th house

For this measurement we computed 21,025 charts for 40.71 N, spaced 1 day and 61 minutes apart from 1950 to 2009, with the Sun, the Moon and Mercury to Pluto. Under Placidus the 10th house held nothing in 46.5% of charts and under Whole Sign in 48.5%; three or more bodies were in it in 5.8% of Placidus charts. The average chart has 5.68 empty houses of 12, so a vacant 10th is an everyday chart and not a gap.

The width of the 10th house

The Whole Sign 10th is 30 degrees without exception. Its Placidus width shifts with latitude, matching the 4th at every moment. The figures below span a complete rotation of the sky:

Latitude Narrowest Average Widest
The equator 27.6 30.0 32.6
Miami (25.8 N) 24.0 30.0 34.4
Los Angeles (34.05 N) 22.4 30.0 35.5
New York (40.71 N) 20.9 30.0 36.7
London (51.5 N) 17.5 30.0 39.8
60 N (Oslo, Helsinki) 12.7 30.0 44.6

The 10th varies more gently than the houses at the horizon: even at 60 N its widest is 44.6 degrees, against a narrowest of 12.7, and in New York it runs from 20.9 to 36.7.

Approaching noon: the Sun in the 10th house

In the late morning the Sun stands in this house. These are Placidus windows in New York clock time, for four days of 2000:

Day Sun in the 10th house (New York clock time)
March 20, 2000 (equinox) 10:04 am to 12:03 pm
June 21, 2000 (solstice) 10:29 am to 12:57 pm
September 22, 2000 (equinox) 10:49 am to 12:48 pm
December 21, 2000 (solstice) 10:24 am to 11:54 am

The reasoning: Placidus cuts the morning between sunrise and local noon into houses 12, 11 and 10, each a third, so the 10th finishes the sequence. June is on daylight saving time, and four dates in one city are a sample, not a general timetable.

Moving from Placidus to Whole Sign

Only 38.6% of the planets in the Placidus 10th were also in the 10th under Whole Sign; 48.9% moved to the 11th and 6.2% to the 9th. The Sun was in the Placidus 10th in 8.37% of charts, near the even-split 8.33%.

Locating your 10th house

Enter your date, place and exact time in a birth chart calculator. The 10th house is the segment at the top, beginning at the Midheaven. If it is vacant, read the sign on its edge and check where that sign’s ruler is.

The 9th house sits just before it and the 11th house just after. Once you have them all, how to read a birth chart gives a sensible order.

Prompts about standing and role

Read these as invitations to think.

  1. What would you like people to say you are known for, and does it match what you are actually doing?
  2. Who has shaped how you think about authority, and what did you take from them?
  3. Where do your public role and private self fit together, and where do they pull apart?

Questions people ask

It is the tenth of the twelve houses of a birth chart, read by astrologers for vocation, public standing and reputation. In quadrant systems it starts at the Midheaven, the highest point of the chart. It is an angular house and, in the natural order of the wheel, echoes Capricorn, the tenth sign.

Astrology does not rank houses, and we do not either. Tradition does read the angular houses, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, as the most prominent in a chart, and the 10th is the one at the top. Prominent means emphasized in a reading. It is not a measure of success or worth.

In quadrant systems such as Placidus, the Midheaven is where the 10th house begins. In Whole Sign it is not: the Midheaven can fall anywhere from the 7th to the 12th house, depending on latitude. In our sample, only 38.6% of Placidus 10th-house planets were also in the 10th under Whole Sign.

Nothing is missing. In our sample of 21,025 charts at 40.71 N, 46.5% had no planet in the 10th house under Placidus and 48.5% under Whole Sign. Astrologers read an empty house through the sign on its edge, which in a quadrant system is the Midheaven sign, and that sign's ruler.

By the natural order the 10th house echoes Capricorn, and guides widely pair it with Saturn, the planet modern astrologers link with Capricorn. One guide adds that older sources tied the house to other planets too, so the pairing is one lens. Your own 10th house is ruled by the sign on its edge.

Astrologers also read the lunar nodes by house. See the North Node in the 10th house, with the South Node in the house opposite.
