1st House in Astrology: The House of Self and the Ascendant

The 1st house in astrology: how the Ascendant marks its start, what Sepharial and Alan Leo listed, how astrologers read it now, and our own figures.

Last updated September 30, 2026

The 1st house is where a birth chart begins. It starts at the Ascendant, the degree of the zodiac that was rising over the eastern horizon when you were born, and astrologers read it as the house of the self: how a person appears, approaches things and begins them. Here we place the first house on the wheel, set old and modern readings side by side, and count how often planets fall in it in our own sample. Nothing here is more than tradition.

Where the 1st house begins: the Ascendant

Leading the angular group, the house echoes Aries, the first sign. Alan Leo’s 1903 line about the “corresponding house” is the same numbering at work: readers were to “pay special attention” to the house that matches each sign. Groups and systems are covered in the houses guide.

Its edge has a name, the Ascendant, and the sign on it is the rising sign. Astrology.com places the Ascendant on the cusp of the house, and Astrology Zone says the sign found there is fixed only by your exact time and location of birth. Our rising sign calculator works that sign out, and our guide to the Sun, Moon and rising signs covers how it sits beside the other two. On the wheel the 1st house sits at the left, just below the horizon line.

Wikipedia’s list of houses gives its old Latin name as Vita, glossed as Life, and says it governs self-identity, physical appearance and the persona. Two modern authors it summarizes see the house differently: Rudhyar as the emergence of consciousness, the individual’s first interaction with the external world, and Arroyo as the lens through which we approach life’s challenges.

Personal appearance and disposition: the early lists

Sepharial, in his 1910 book Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope, begins the list with “the personal appearance”. He also assigned a body part to each house, which we leave out. Alan Leo, in How to Judge a Nativity (1903), gives the house “Personality, natural disposition, worldly outlook generally”. Both authors are describing the same thing modern guides call self-image and approach: what a person shows and how they meet the world.

Self, mask and mirror in modern guides

The house of self and first impressions

Guides widely describe the 1st house as the house of the self. Astrology.com calls it the House of Self and speaks of individual beginnings. Astrology Zone lists personality and appearance and what is important to the person. Astrostyle says it covers all the firsts: the first impression, how you take initiative and start things. Numerologist.com calls the house the lens through which a person perceives everything.

Is the rising sign a mask?

Guides split on one popular image. Astrostyle says the rising sign shows how you want to be seen, a kind of mask. Numerologist.com argues the mask metaphor misleads, because the 1st house is not something worn over a hidden self but the way reality arrives for you. Wikipedia’s summary of Greene uses the mask image too. Both readings are beliefs, so they are held here side by side and neither is treated as the answer.

Paired with the 7th house

Directly opposite sits the 7th. Numerologist.com says the Ascendant is permanently paired with the seventh house, and Astrology Zone puts the pair as me and thou. The 7th house page reads the far end of that line.

A planet near the Ascendant

Traditionally, astrologers treat planets in the angular houses as the most prominent, and those nearest the Ascendant most of all. A planet here is therefore often described as visible in a person’s style or manner. That is a convention about emphasis, not about any planet, and we give no verdict on any of them.

The 1st house in our own charts

We built 21,025 charts for latitude 40.71 N, one for every 1 day and 61 minutes between 1950 and 2009, each with the Sun, the Moon and Mercury to Pluto. Placidus left the 1st house empty in 46.4% of them and Whole Sign in 44.9%; 7.7% of Placidus charts put three or more bodies in it. With 5.68 empty houses in the average chart, an empty 1st is one of the ordinary shapes a chart takes. Astrologers read it through the rising sign and that sign’s ruler, and one guide gives the same method: once you know your rising sign, look at where its ruling planet is placed.

Widths of the 1st house by latitude

Whole Sign makes the house a constant 30 degrees, while Placidus stretches and shrinks it with the sky, in step with the 7th. The figures cover a complete rotation of the sky:

Latitude Narrowest Average Widest
The equator 27.6 30.0 32.6
Miami (25.8 N) 23.2 30.0 39.8
Los Angeles (34.05 N) 21.3 30.0 43.7
New York (40.71 N) 19.5 30.0 48.1
London (51.5 N) 15.7 30.0 60.5
60 N (Oslo, Helsinki) 10.9 30.0 84.9

The average never moves off 30, but the spread widens northward: in London the 1st house runs from 15.7 to 60.5 degrees, and at 60 N from 10.9 to 84.9.

Before dawn: the Sun in the 1st house

In the last hours before sunrise the Sun stands in this house. New York clock times, Placidus, four days of 2000:

Day Sun in the 1st house (New York clock time)
March 20, 2000 (equinox) 4:04 am to 6:03 am
June 21, 2000 (solstice) 4:00 am to 5:30 am
September 22, 2000 (equinox) 4:49 am to 6:48 am
December 21, 2000 (solstice) 4:53 am to 7:21 am

Why the 1st is last: from midnight to sunrise Placidus takes the Sun through houses 3, 2 and 1 in equal thirds, and the 1st ends the run. June is on daylight saving time, and this is New York on four dates, not everywhere.

What Whole Sign does to first-house planets

Among planets in the Placidus 1st, 49% were in the 1st under Whole Sign, 49% in the 2nd and 0% in the 12th. The Sun was in the Placidus 1st in 7.92% of charts, under the even-split 8.33%.

Working out your 1st house

Bring your birth date, place and an exact time, since a few minutes can change the rising sign. A birth chart calculator draws the Ascendant and the house edges, and the 1st house is the segment that starts at the Ascendant.

Just before it on the wheel is the 12th house, and just after it the 2nd house. What to look at next is laid out in how to read a birth chart.

Prompts about self and manner

Use them as starting points, no more.

  1. What do people usually say about you the first time they meet you, and how close is it to how you see yourself?
  2. How do you tend to begin things: quickly, slowly, or only when asked?
  3. Which parts of your manner feel like a choice, and which feel like part of you?

Questions people ask

The 1st house is the segment of your birth chart that begins at the Ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It needs your birth date, place and exact time. Enter them in a chart calculator and look at the section just below the horizon line on the left.

Astrology does not rank houses, and we do not either. What tradition does say is that the angular houses, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, are read as the most prominent in a chart, and planets close to the Ascendant most of all. Prominent means emphasized in a reading, not better.

Not quite. The rising sign is the zodiac sign on the Ascendant, the first edge of the 1st house. The house is the whole segment that follows the edge. Under Whole Sign houses the two line up completely, and under Placidus the 1st house can run into the next sign.

Nothing is missing. In our sample of 21,025 charts at 40.71 N, 46.4% had no planet in the 1st house under Placidus and 44.9% under Whole Sign. Astrologers read an empty house through its edge sign, which for the 1st house is the rising sign, and that sign's ruler.

Sometimes. Of the planets we found in the Placidus 1st house, 49% were also in the 1st under Whole Sign and 49% had moved to the 2nd (21,025 charts, 40.71 N). Planets far from a house edge are the likeliest to stay. Compare both systems in a chart calculator.

Astrologers also read the lunar nodes by house. See the North Node in the 1st house, with the South Node in the house opposite.
