The North Node is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path, heading north. Astrologers read it as a direction of growth and the South Node, opposite it, as familiar ground. There are two ways to calculate it, and we show both.

What is my North Node, and how do I find it?

Your North Node is the sign and degree where the Moon's ascending node stood on the day you were born. It is a calculated point, not a planet, and it says nothing until you know where it was: that is all "what is my North Node" asks. There are three ways to find your North Node:

  1. Use the calculator above. Enter your birth date and place. The node moves about three arcminutes a day, so the date is almost always enough; a birth time only matters on the few days when the node changes sign.
  2. Look it up by birth date. Our North Node guide has a table of North Node signs for every date from 1930 to 2030. In that table a stay in one sign lasts 566 or 567 days.
  3. Read it off a chart you already have. Look for the node glyph, a horseshoe open at the bottom, and note the sign it stands in. The North Node symbol page shows it drawn large.

The sign is only the first layer. With a birth time the node also falls in one of the twelve houses, and the birth chart calculator shows which. The house is sensitive to the clock: in our sample of 21,025 charts (1950 to 2009, latitude 40.71 N, Placidus), a birth time 30 minutes later put the node in a different house in 25% of them.

Mean node or true node: which we use

The Moon's orbit wobbles, so its node does not move perfectly smoothly. The mean node smooths the wobble out: it moves steadily backwards through the zodiac, completing the circle in about 18.6 years. The true node follows the actual orbit of the Moon at that moment: it runs up to about two degrees ahead of or behind the mean node, and it even moves forward for short spells, on about a quarter of all days. Both are in common use, and astrologers disagree about which is better.

We lead with the mean node, because it is the one our birth chart calculator and our personal readings use, so your results stay consistent across the site. We always show the true node beside it. Between 1950 and 2049 the two fell in different signs on 3.3% of days; if your birth date is one of them, your result says so and gives you both readings.

The South Node

The South Node is always exactly opposite the North Node: same degree, opposite sign. Where the North Node is read as the direction of growth, the South Node is read as what comes naturally, the habits and strengths you can lean on too much. Your result shows both.

How we calculate it

The mean node comes from the standard formula in Jean Meeus' Astronomical Algorithms. The true node is the ascending node of the Moon's actual orbit at your birth moment, computed from the Moon's position and motion with Astronomy Engine. We test both against the Swiss Ephemeris, the ephemeris behind astro.com, on ten birth charts from 1879 to 1989 in both hemispheres: the mean node agrees within a third of an arcminute and the true node within half an arcminute. Our North Node guide explains what astrologers read into the node, sign by sign, with a table of North Node signs from 1930 to 2030 that you can check by birth date alone. The node cycle is one of astrology's long rhythms; Saturn's return is another. The node is part of the Moon's story, so your Moon sign is a natural next step. In numerology, the life path number is also read as a direction.

The North Node in each sign

How astrologers read the North Node in each of the twelve signs, with the South Node opposite and every stay of the node in the sign from 1930 to 2030.

The North Node in each house

With a birth time the node also falls in a house. Each page reads the node in one house with the South Node in the house opposite, and shows how much the house depends on the birth time, from our sample of 21,025 charts.

Questions people ask

You need the position of the Moon's ascending node on your birth date. It moves slowly, about a degree every 19 days, so your date of birth is enough in almost every case. Enter it above with your birthplace and we give you the sign and degree of your North Node, with your South Node exactly opposite, calculated both ways astrologers use: the mean node and the true node.

No. The rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth, and it changes about every two hours. The North Node is a point on the Moon's orbit that stays in a sign for about a year and a half, so everyone born in the same season shares it. They can happen to be in the same sign, but they are calculated and read differently. Find your rising sign with the rising sign calculator.

As of October 2026, the mean North Node is in Aquarius, and the true node agrees. The node moves backwards through the zodiac, spending about eighteen months in each sign and completing the circle in about 18.6 years.

Look on the chart wheel for the node glyph, a horseshoe shape open at the bottom with a small circle at each end. The sign it stands in is your North Node sign, and the section of the wheel it sits in is its house. The South Node is often not drawn: it is always at the same degree of the opposite sign.

Your birth date. The two nodes are the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path, and they drift slowly backward through the zodiac, so their signs depend on when you were born. The South Node is always exactly opposite the North Node. Your birth time adds the houses they fall in, not the signs, except on a day the node changes sign.

The North Node changes sign about every year and a half. In our computation of the mean node for every day from 1930 to 2030, each full stay in a sign lasted 566 or 567 days. The whole circle takes about 18.6 years, so the node returns to the sign it held at your birth around the ages of 18 to 19, 37 and 56.

Some astrologers say so. A school often called karmic astrology links the South Node with past lives and reads the North Node as the direction to grow in this one. Others read the same axis as habit and growth, with no past lives involved. We present both as beliefs held by astrologers and take no side; nothing in the calculation itself is karmic.

It changes sign. The true node moves from Pisces into Aquarius on July 27, 2026, and the mean node follows on August 18, 2026 (Universal Time, from our calculator). It then stays in Aquarius for about a year and a half. Astrologers read these changes as a shift in collective themes; nothing about them changes your own North Node, which is fixed at birth.
