North Node in the 6th House: Meaning and Axis

What astrologers say a North Node in the 6th house means, how they read the South Node in the 12th, and what our own chart counts show for this house.

Last updated September 30, 2026

A North Node in the 6th house means the Moon’s ascending node sits in the sixth house of a birth chart; some pages say 6th house North Node instead. The node is a calculated point rather than a planet, and the North Node guide explains where it comes from. This page sets out how modern astrologers read the sixth house placement and the South Node across from it, what the older manuals leave out, and what our own chart counts show. Everything is tradition and belief, for reflection and entertainment.

A North Node in the 6th house: routine and craft

Astrologers read the sixth house, a cadent house, for daily work, routine and service, and the 6th house page tells the whole story. Guides widely describe it that way, and several connect it with everyday health habits as well, as description only. Beyond the house’s own topic, today’s astrologers usually treat the node’s house as the ground where its growth theme is tested.

On the sixth house ground, the guides widely describe growth toward daily routine, practical work and service. The pages word it as trading grand gestures for good systems, as moving from vague imagination to routine duties, or as learning to show up for ordinary tasks. The zodiac sign belongs to another layer. Virgo takes the sixth place in the natural sequence of signs, and a few guides reuse the same language for both, but North Node in Virgo is a different placement and depends on the year of birth.

What the older lists say, and what they leave out

Sepharial, in 1910, gave the sixth house servants and personal comforts, and his list goes on to “clothes, food, and other physical requisites”. Alan Leo, in 1903, described it in terms of “Service and attachments arising from the expression of the tenth house”. Leo’s list also includes matters of illness, which modern astrologers usually recast as routine and everyday care.

Neither older manual we read assigns a house meaning to the node. Leo’s book has no passage on the Moon’s nodes, and Sepharial’s mentions them only for transits. The reading on this page is modern, and comes from popular web guides.

South Node in the 12th house: the end the pages call familiar

A North Node in the 6th puts the South Node in the 12th. That held in all 21,025 charts of our sample (one every 1 day and 61 minutes, 1950 to 2009, 40.71 N, mean node), under Placidus and under Whole Sign, with 0 exceptions, since opposite points fall in opposite houses.

Guides widely describe the 12th house end as retreat, daydream and the big picture: a pull toward what is inward or abstract. One page says the big picture feels like freedom; another describes escaping into a dream world. Some guides frame this as a habit from earlier lifetimes, and others as a plain tendency of temperament; the past-life reading is only one of the views on offer. Nothing here is graded, and the guides call the 12th house end familiar, not worse. For this axis read from the other end, see the North Node in the 12th house page.

Dream and routine: how the axis is described

Structure and its limits

The pages describe a pull between dreaming and routine, and several add that structure has its own risks. Astro-Seek sets rational against irrational and self-adjustment against self-sacrifice. Other guides warn that routine can turn rigid, that perfection can be mistaken for worth, and that the practical end can crowd out everything else. The aim they describe is flexible structure, or an integration of the two houses, not one end alone.

Service, craft and the settings pages name

Several guides associate the placement with service, craft and refinement, and a couple of them name project management, quality control and craftwork as examples. The lists differ page to page. They are associations, and nothing in them is a suggestion about anyone’s work.

Practical care

Two pages speak about care shown through practical acts, with clear limits so that service does not slide into sacrifice. They describe a way of relating that shows up reliably, and they say it about the placement, not about any one relationship.

Counting the 6th house node

The figures come from the mean North Node in our sample of 21,025 charts, taken every 1 day and 61 minutes from January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2009 at 40.71 N, New York’s latitude.

  • Under Placidus the node was in the 6th house in 8.38% of the charts (1,762 charts), and under Whole Sign in 8.51%. Twelve houses sharing evenly would each get 8.33%.
  • Among the Placidus charts with the node in the 6th house, 48.4% kept it in the 6th under Whole Sign, 49.2% moved it to the 7th and 2.4% to the 5th. Over all twelve houses, the node changed house between the systems in 53.9% of charts.
  • Moving the birth time 15 minutes later put the node in a different Placidus house in 12.5% of these charts, 30 minutes later in 24.9% and 60 minutes later in 50%.
  • In 3.23% of these charts the true node was in a different Placidus house from the mean node (all houses: 3.26%).

Here is when the mean node was in this house under Placidus on four days of 2000, by New York clock time:

Day Mean North Node that day North Node in the 6th house (New York clock time)
March 20, 2000 0 degrees of Leo 3:29 am to 5:03 am
June 21, 2000 25 degrees of Cancer 10:03 pm to 11:36 pm
September 22, 2000 21 degrees of Cancer 3:40 pm to 5:12 pm
December 21, 2000 16 degrees of Cancer 8:29 am to 10:00 am

The node crawls about 3.18 arcminutes a day, so the sky turns past it once a day and the window moves around the clock. A point spends 92 to 148 minutes a day in the 6th house at this latitude, depending on its sign. So the year of birth decides the node’s sign, and the hour decides its house. The June row is on daylight saving time, and the node moved from Leo to Cancer during 2000, which is why the times also drift through the year.

Locating a 6th house node on the wheel

A chart casts the houses from the date, the exact time and the birthplace. With a date alone, the North Node calculator gives the sign but not the house. The birth chart calculator shows where the node falls on the wheel, using Placidus by default with Whole Sign as an option, and it is worth checking both because of the 53.9% figure above.

Prompts for a 6th and 12th house axis

Take them as questions and nothing more.

  1. Which ordinary part of a day feels most like your own, and which feels like it belongs to someone else’s clock?
  2. When does time alone feel restful, and when does it feel like drifting?
  3. What would a routine look like that has room to bend?

Questions people ask

Modern guides read it as a growth theme around daily routine, practical work, craft and service to others. The wording varies from page to page, and none of it comes from a classical rule. It is a belief offered for reflection: the house names a theme, and it says nothing fixed about any one person's days.

Yes, always. The two nodes sit exactly opposite each other, and so do their houses. In our sample of 21,025 charts there was not one exception, under either Placidus or Whole Sign. The 12th house page describes the same axis starting from the other end.

Astrologers read the 6th house for daily work and routine, so guides tie the node's house to it. Pages name service, craft and refinement as settings they associate with it, and their lists differ. These are associations from popular guides, offered as description, and they are not guidance about anyone's job.

It is as common as any other house. The mean node fell in the 6th house in 8.38% of 21,025 charts under Placidus, against an even split of 8.33%, and in 8.51% under Whole Sign. Astrology grades no placement, and by this count none of the twelve houses is rare for the node.

A great deal. The node's sign comes from the date, but its house turns with the hour. In our sample, shifting the birth time by 60 minutes moved a 6th house node into another Placidus house in 50% of the cases, and a 15 minute shift did so in 12.5%.
