North Node in the 11th House: Meaning and South Node in 5th

What astrologers say a North Node in the 11th house means, how they read the South Node in the 5th, and our counts of how often the node falls there.

Last updated September 30, 2026

A North Node in the 11th house puts the Moon’s ascending node in the eleventh house of the chart, the house astrologers read for friends, groups and hopes. It also appears in print as 11th house North Node. The node is a calculated point, not a planet; the North Node guide explains where it comes from. This page follows what modern guides say about this placement and the South Node in the 5th house opposite it, and then reports what we counted in a large set of charts. It is tradition and belief, offered for reflection.

North Node in the 11th house: belonging beyond the spotlight

Sepharial, in 1910, wrote that the eleventh house governs “friends, social relations, societies and companies”, and Alan Leo, in 1903, gave it “acquaintances, hopes, wishes and aspirations”. The 11th house page is the place for the house itself.

Astrologers today read a node by house as pointing to the life area where its growth theme unfolds, and many guides describe the 11th house version as growth toward groups and shared purpose. They write of taking part in something larger than personal recognition, finding meaning in collective work, and building on shared values. Five sites we read speak in compatible words, and one page adds that the aim is to belong without losing oneself.

The sign is another layer, set by the year and found with the North Node calculator. Aquarius matches the eleventh house in the natural order of the wheel, and a guide or two borrows Aquarius language for this placement, but North Node in Aquarius describes a different thing.

The South Node in the 5th house: the spotlight end

Opposite it, the South Node falls in the 5th house. In all 21,025 charts of our sample (1950 to 2009, 40.71 N, mean node), it was in the 5th house under Placidus and under Whole Sign, with no exception. Many guides describe this end as familiar ground: personal recognition, romance, creative self-expression and one-to-one intensity. One page pictures it as a reflex toward the spotlight and toward relationships that center on the person, and another says the diffuse web of collective effort can feel like dilution at first. Read from the other end, the axis is on North Node in the 5th house.

Some of these pages frame the 5th house end as earlier lifetimes spent on personal expression, and some read it as habit. It is one belief among several.

Friends, causes and the future

Friendship as the theme

Several guides describe the relating theme of this placement as friendship on shared values, set beside romantic intensity. They use words such as kindred minds and shared work, and one page sets platonic love against passionate experience. These are descriptions of a theme, and they do not say how any friendship turns out.

Hopes, causes and what lies ahead

Guides commonly tie the placement to hopes and the future: one page names technology and humanitarian causes, another asks what a group is building and with whom, a third mentions new ideas and reforms. A single page, by contrast, warns that looking too far ahead can cost touch with the present. Treat these as associations, not suggestions about anyone’s path.

Being seen and being part of a group

The pull the guides describe runs between being noticed as an individual and belonging without needing to be the center. One page says it asks for a capacity to contribute without applause, another describes braiding distinct gifts into a larger pattern without disappearing inside it, and a third cautions against demanding attention and admiration. No end of the axis is graded in the guides, and this page grades none.

An astrologer who reads the 5th and 11th together

Alice Sparkly Kat, in a 2023 essay, writes that she ignores the direction of the nodes for the 5th and 11th houses: a node in either, north or south, has a similar effect in her work. She reads the two houses through growing up and responsibility, and describes the eleventh house as the outcome of the tenth, about building love into the future. That is a minority reading, and the popular guides above do not share it.

What the older manuals say about a node here

Both old manuals we checked stay silent on the node by house: nothing in Leo’s 1903 text, and in Sepharial’s 1910 text only references to transits. The house reading above is modern.

The hour decides the house: our counts

We computed 21,025 charts, one every 1 day and 61 minutes from 1950 to 2009, at 40.71 N, with the mean North Node. Under Placidus it fell in the 11th house in 8.27% of them (1,738 charts), and under Whole Sign in 8.17%, against 8.33% for twelve equal shares; nothing about the 11th is unusual.

Between the two house systems the picture shifts. Of the Placidus 11th house charts, 46.9% also had the node in the 11th under Whole Sign, 44.3% had it in the 12th and 7.2% in the 10th. Across the whole wheel, a change of system moved the node to another house in 53.9% of the charts.

Birth time moves it too. In the charts with the node in the 11th under Placidus, a birth 15 minutes later changed the house in 12.8%, 30 minutes later in 25% and 60 minutes later in 50.3%, compared with 12.5%, 25% and 50.2% for all houses. The true node landed in a different Placidus house than the mean node in 2.82% of these charts (3.26% over all houses).

The cause is the sky’s daily turn. A node shifts about 3.18 arcminutes in a day, so the houses pass across it once in 24 hours, starting at the 12th. The 11th sits above the horizon; Placidus at 40.71 N gives a point 92 to 148 minutes in it each day, depending on the point’s sign (a point at 15 degrees of the sign; 1,436 minutes make one full turn). The table gives the window in New York on four days of 2000, with June 21 on daylight saving time. The year sets the node’s sign, and the hour of birth sets the house.

Day Mean North Node that day North Node in the 11th house (New York clock time)
March 20, 2000 0 degrees of Leo 3:25 pm to 5:48 pm
June 21, 2000 25 degrees of Cancer 9:57 am to 12:21 pm
September 22, 2000 21 degrees of Cancer 3:28 am to 5:53 am
December 21, 2000 16 degrees of Cancer 8:08 pm to 10:34 pm

Which house holds your North Node?

Finding it takes the birth date, the exact birth time and the birthplace. Without a time, the North Node calculator still gives the sign but no house. The birth chart calculator places the node in a house, with Placidus as its default and Whole Sign available, and a named house is only meaningful alongside the system used.

Prompts on belonging

Use them or skip them; they are only prompts.

  1. In a group you belong to, what part do you most like to play, and what part do you avoid?
  2. What would you want to contribute to something without your name attached?
  3. Which friendships rest on shared interests, and which on something else?

Questions people ask

Astrologers read it as a growth theme in the area of friends, groups and shared hopes. Guides widely describe a pull from the personal spotlight toward belonging to something shared. It is a modern belief drawn from popular guides, not a rule from older manuals, and it is offered for reflection.

In the 5th house. In our sample of 21,025 charts the two nodes sat in opposite houses every time, under both Placidus and Whole Sign. Guides describe the 5th house end as the familiar one, with themes of personal expression, romance and being noticed.

As a central theme. Several guides describe friendship built on shared values, set beside the intensity of romance, and they offer it as a pattern and not a prescription. None of them measures how any friendship goes, and neither does this page. It is belief for reflection.

Rarely. In our sample the true node fell in a different Placidus house from the mean node in 2.82% of the charts with the mean node in the 11th, against 3.26% over all houses. The birth chart calculator draws the mean node, and the North Node calculator shows both.

Often. Whole Sign assigns houses by sign rather than by time, so in our sample 46.9% of nodes in the Placidus 11th house stayed there, 44.3% moved to the 12th and 7.2% to the 10th. A chart should say which system it uses before anyone names a house.
