Numerology Name Calculator

For the Pythagorean numbers, use every name on your birth certificate. Accents are read as the plain letter.

Calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

Type a name once and see every number numerology draws from it: the expression (destiny) number, the soul urge, the personality number and Cheiro's Chaldean name number. Switch between the Pythagorean and Chaldean letter tables and check each letter yourself.

Four numbers from one name

Numerology reads a name in more than one way, and most sites give you one number per page. This calculator does the whole name at once, with the same arithmetic as our single-number tools, so the results always match.

  • Expression number, also called the destiny number: every letter of the name. Our expression number calculator gives the full reading for it.
  • Soul urge number, or heart's desire: the vowels only, read as inner motivation. More on the soul urge calculator.
  • Personality number: the consonants only, read as the first impression you give. More on the personality number calculator.
  • Chaldean name number: every letter again, but with the Chaldean values that Cheiro printed in his Book of Numbers. He read the two-digit total, the compound number, before reducing it to one digit, so we show both.

The three Pythagorean numbers reduce each name on its own, keep the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, then add the names together and reduce again. The Chaldean number adds every letter of the name and reduces the total to a single digit, the way Cheiro works his own examples.

Pythagorean or Chaldean: what the toggle changes

The two systems give letters different values. The Pythagorean table runs through the alphabet in order, so A is 1, I is 9 and J starts again at 1. The Chaldean table follows the sound of each letter, uses only 1 to 8, and leaves the 9 out; Cheiro's reason was that "the number 9 represents the 9-lettered name of God". The switch above the result changes which values the letter-by-letter table shows and which working lines follow it. All four numbers stay on screen either way.

Here are both tables in full. Our guide to Pythagorean vs Chaldean numerology explains where each comes from and how we checked the Chaldean column against Cheiro's printed table.

A worked example: Maya Rivera

Take a fictional name, Maya Rivera, and run it through both tables.

  • Expression, Pythagorean. MAYA is 4 + 1 + 7 + 1 = 13, which reduces to 4. RIVERA is 9 + 9 + 4 + 5 + 9 + 1 = 37, then 10, then 1. 4 + 1 = 5.
  • Soul urge. In MAYA the Y sits next to an A, so under the standard rule it is a consonant and only the two A's count: 2. RIVERA's vowels I, E and A give 15, which reduces to 6. 2 + 6 = 8.
  • Personality. MAYA's consonants, M and Y, give 11, a master number, so it stays. RIVERA's R, V and R give 22, another master number. 11 + 22 = 33, a third.
  • Chaldean name number. MAYA is 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 7 and RIVERA is 2 + 1 + 6 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 17. The compound total is 24, which reduces to 6.

One name, four numbers, and the two tables do not agree on the total: 5 in the Pythagorean expression number, 6 in the Chaldean. That is normal. They are two conventions, not two measurements, and neither can be checked against anything outside itself.

Which name to enter

Pythagorean practice, which most calculators follow, uses the full name on your birth certificate, middle names included, and reads a later name such as a married name as an extra layer rather than a replacement. Cheiro did it differently: in his worked examples he adds the name a person is most commonly known by. If you go by a nickname, a shortened name or a married name, it is worth running both versions and comparing. Hyphens and apostrophes are ignored, and accented letters count as the plain letter.

What the numbers are, and what they are not

The arithmetic is exact: give two careful people the same name and the same table and they reach the same total. The meanings are a tradition. The short summaries in your result are our own descriptions, written from how modern numerologists use each number; the full readings live on each single-number calculator. None of it predicts anything or tells you what to do, and our methodology page sets out every rule we follow, including the Y rule and master numbers.

Questions people ask

Give each letter of your name a number from a letter table, add the letters of each name, and reduce the total to one digit. In the Pythagorean table A is 1 and I is 9; in the Chaldean table values run from 1 to 8. The calculator above does both and shows every letter, so you can check the sums by hand.

They are the nine root numbers every name reduces to. In the summaries on this site, which follow modern usage, 1 is linked with independence, 2 cooperation, 3 expression, 4 structure, 5 adaptability, 6 care, 7 reflection, 8 leadership and 9 compassion. Readings differ between authors and eras, so treat them as a tradition, not a verdict.

None, in the way we use numerology. The tradition describes what a number is associated with; it does not rank numbers as lucky or unlucky, and we do not either. Some authors do call certain numbers fortunate, but that is their claim, not a result anyone has measured, and it says nothing about what your own name will bring.

Most Pythagorean numerologists use the full name on your birth certificate for the core numbers and read a later name, such as a married name, as an added influence. Cheiro, the best known Chaldean writer, added the name a person is most commonly known by. Run both through the calculator and compare.

Because the letters carry different values. The Pythagorean table runs through the alphabet in order from 1 to 9, while the Chaldean table follows the sound of each letter and never gives a letter the value 9. Same name, different table, usually a different total. Neither is more correct; they are two conventions.
