Rising Sign Calculator
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time and place. We also show the window of time in which your result holds, in case your recorded time is a little off.
What the rising sign is
As the Earth turns, the whole zodiac appears to rise in the east over the course of a day, one sign after another. The sign on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth is your rising sign. Astrologers associate it with your outward manner: the first impression you give and the way you tend to meet new situations. It also sets the starting point of the houses, so it shapes the layout of the whole chart.
Why the birth time matters so much
A new sign rises roughly every two hours, but not evenly. Depending on your latitude, some signs cross the horizon in under an hour and others take close to three. A birth time that is off by twenty minutes can be enough to change the result if you were born near a boundary, which is why we show the time window in which your rising sign holds. A birth certificate or hospital record is the best source for the time.
How we calculate it
We convert your birth time to Universal Time with the historical time zone rules of your birthplace, including daylight saving time as it was observed that year, and local mean time for births before standard time. The ascendant is then computed from the sidereal time, the tilt of the Earth's axis and your latitude, in the tropical zodiac. The ascendant is the same in every house system: Placidus and Whole Sign only differ in where the other houses begin.
We check this calculator against the published charts in Astro-Databank, the astro.com collection of documented birth data: ten charts from 1879 to 1987 in both hemispheres, including daylight saving time, local mean time and two ascendants within about a degree of a sign boundary. Every ascendant matches to within one arcminute. The tests run every time the site is built; see how we calculate.

Questions people ask
You need four things: your birth time converted to Universal Time, the local sidereal time at your birthplace (Greenwich sidereal time plus your longitude), the tilt of the Earth's axis for that date (about 23.44°), and your latitude. The ascendant is then the point of the zodiac crossing the eastern horizon, found with a standard spherical trigonometry formula. Before computers, astrologers looked it up in printed tables of houses for their latitude. This calculator does the same arithmetic and shows the Universal Time and offset it used, so you can check them.
On a chart wheel the rising sign is the point on the far left, at nine o'clock, where the horizon line meets the circle. That point, the Ascendant, is also where the first house begins, and the other houses follow counterclockwise from it. Our birth chart calculator draws the wheel this way.
It depends on where you were born, because some signs cross the horizon much faster than others. We measured it with this calculator over a full day: at 40° north, Aries and Pisces rise for only about 1 hour 12 minutes each, while Leo takes about 2 hours 32 minutes. In the southern hemisphere it flips: at Sydney's latitude, Virgo and Libra are the quickest. Births are not spread perfectly evenly over the day, so treat this as a close estimate rather than a census.
Astrology does not rank rising signs by luck. The rising sign is read as a style of approach, the manner you meet new people and situations with, and each sign is described with its own strengths and growth edges. No tradition we know of promises good fortune to one of them.
