Your life path number is the central number in numerology, drawn from your full date of birth. Enter it below: you will see the number, every step of the arithmetic, and what numerologists traditionally say about it.

How the life path number is calculated

The standard method reduces each part of the birth date on its own, then adds the three results together. Reducing means adding the digits of a number until one digit is left, with one exception: 11, 22 and 33 are master numbers and are kept as they are.

  1. 1Reduce the month. July is 7. December is 12, which becomes 1 + 2 = 3. November stays 11.
  2. 2Reduce the day. The 15th becomes 1 + 5 = 6. The 29th becomes 11, a master number.
  3. 3Reduce the year. 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1.
  4. 4Add and reduce once more. For July 15, 1990: 7 + 6 + 1 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5. Life path 5.

Some calculators instead add every digit of the date in one long sum. Most of the time the answer is the same, but the two methods can disagree about master numbers. When they do, our result tells you, so you can see both. The full reasoning is on our methodology page.

How common is each life path number?

We ran the calculator over every date from 1950 through 2009. Nine of the numbers turn up on roughly one date in nine. The master numbers, and the 2 and 4 they borrow from, are less common.

Questions people ask

With the method on this page, 33 is the rarest. We counted every calendar date from January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2009 (21,915 dates): 33 came up on 0.87% of them, 22 on 3.07%, 2 on 4.62% and 11 on 6.50%. The 2 is uncommon only because many dates that would reduce to 2 are kept as the master number 11 instead. Real births are not spread perfectly evenly across dates, so treat these as close estimates.

Numerology does not rank the numbers by luck. Each life path describes a different temperament with its own strengths and growth edges, and no tradition we know of promises good fortune to any of them. If a site tells you one number is luckier than another, it is offering an opinion, not a calculation.

No life path measures intelligence. Numerologists associate the 7 with analysis and research, the 1 with independent thinking and the 11 with intuition, but these describe styles of thinking, not ability. People with every number do brilliant work.

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879. Month 3, day 14 reduces to 5, and 1879 reduces to 25 and then 7. 3 + 5 + 7 = 15, which reduces to 6. So his life path number is 6 with this method.

Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 (Gregorian calendar). Month 7, day 10 reduces to 1, and 1856 reduces to 20 and then 2. 7 + 1 + 2 = 10, which reduces to 1. His life path number is 1.
