Numerology describes life as moving through repeating nine-year cycles. Your personal year number tells you where you are in yours: a year for beginning, building, changing, reflecting or completing.

How the personal year works

Your personal year number combines your birth month and day with the calendar year. Unlike the life path, it changes every year, stepping from 1 to 9 and then starting over. Each step has its own traditional theme, and the order matters: numerologists read a 4 year as the ground that a 5 year's changes rest on.

Most numerologists run the personal year from January 1 to December 31, which is what this calculator does. Some prefer to start it on your birthday instead; if that is your practice, the number simply changes a few months later.

Looking ahead? Our guide to numerology 2027 explains why 2027 counts as a 2 (or an 11/2), with a lookup grid for every birthday.

The nine personal years

1

Year 1: New Beginnings

In numerology, a Personal Year 1 opens a new nine-year cycle. It is traditionally a time to set intentions, try new directions and act on ideas you have been holding back.

2

Year 2: Patience and Partnership

A Personal Year 2 follows the start of the cycle with a slower, more relational rhythm. Numerologists associate it with patience, partnership and tending the seeds planted in the previous year.

3

Year 3: Expression and Connection

In numerology, a Personal Year 3 brings the early cycle into the open. It is associated with creativity, communication and a livelier social life after the quieter pace of a 2 year.

4

Year 4: Building Foundations

A Personal Year 4 is traditionally a year of work and structure. Numerologists see it as the point in the cycle when ideas from the first three years are given solid, practical form.

5

Year 5: Change and Freedom

In numerology, a Personal Year 5 marks the midpoint of the cycle. It is associated with change, movement and fresh experience after the disciplined work of a 4 year.

6

Year 6: Responsibility and Care

A Personal Year 6 is traditionally focused on home, relationships and responsibility. After the movement of the 5 year, numerologists see it as a time to settle commitments and care for what matters.

7

Year 7: Reflection and Study

In numerology, a Personal Year 7 invites a pause for reflection. It is associated with study, solitude and a deeper look at what the cycle so far has taught you.

8

Year 8: Achievement and Authority

A Personal Year 8 is associated in numerology with effort coming to fruition. It is traditionally a year of decisions, responsibility and stepping more fully into your own authority.

9

Year 9: Completion and Release

In numerology, a Personal Year 9 closes the nine-year cycle. It is associated with completion, letting go and preparing the ground for the new beginning of a 1 year.

Questions people ask

Add your birth month, your birth day and the calendar year, reducing each to a single digit first, then reduce the total. For someone born July 15 in the year 2026: July is 7, the 15th is 1 + 5 = 6, and 2026 is 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1. 7 + 6 + 1 = 14, and 1 + 4 = 5. Personal year 5. Your birth year is not used.

Numerology reads the personal years as a nine-year cycle. Broadly: 1 begins, 2 cooperates and waits, 3 expresses, 4 builds, 5 changes, 6 tends to home and responsibility, 7 reflects, 8 takes stock of effort and results, and 9 completes and lets go before a new 1. The full description of each year is on this page.

As a life path number, 11 is the most common of the three master numbers. Across every calendar date from 1950 through 2009, 11 came up on 6.50% of dates, 22 on 3.07% and 33 on 0.87%, using the method on our life path calculator. For personal years, most numerologists reduce 11 and 22 to 2 and 4, which is what we do; when your total passes through a master number, we tell you.
