Venus is the planet astrologers read for affection, pleasure and what you value. Your Venus sign is where it stood on the zodiac when you were born. Your birth date and place are usually enough; the time only matters on the rare days Venus changed sign.

What your Venus sign describes

In astrology, Venus is associated with love and friendship, beauty, pleasure and the things you find worth having. Your Venus sign is read as your style in all of these: how you show affection, what draws you to people, what feels like a treat and what you will not compromise on. It is often the placement people look at when they want to understand how they connect, alongside Mars for desire and drive.

Why your Venus sign is close to your Sun sign

Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun: over the hundred years from 1950 to 2049, the greatest distance between them was 47 degrees. So your Venus sign is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. A Leo Sun, for example, can only have Venus in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra.

Venus retrograde

About every nineteen months Venus appears to move backwards for around six weeks. Over 1950 to 2049 it was retrograde on 7.3% of days, so roughly one person in fourteen is born with Venus retrograde. Astrologers often read it as affection and values that turn inward and are reconsidered before they are shown, but it is a nuance, not a warning. Your result says whether yours was.

How we calculate it

We convert your birth time to Universal Time with the historical time zone rules of your birthplace, then compute the position of Venus as seen from Earth with Astronomy Engine, in the tropical zodiac. We test it against NASA's JPL Horizons ephemeris on fifteen dates from 1879 to 2020, including a retrograde Venus, a southern hemisphere birth and a birth date on which Venus changed sign: every position agrees within a fifth of an arcminute, and the change time matches to the minute. Astrologers often read Venus together with Mars. Your Moon sign adds what you need to feel close, and the full birth chart shows the house your Venus falls in. For two people, compare both charts in a synastry chart, try numerology compatibility by birth date, or see your life path number.

Questions people ask

Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus occupied at the moment you were born. Venus spends about four weeks in a sign, so your birth date and place are almost always enough. On about 3.5% of days from 1950 to 1999 Venus changed sign during the day, and then the birth time decides; without it, we show both signs and the time of the change. Enter your details above to get the sign, the exact degree and whether Venus was retrograde.

Astrologers read Venus as the planet of affection, taste and what you value, and the sign as the style of it: how you show warmth, what draws you in, what feels like a pleasure. Sepharial, in 1910, wrote that Venus "confers poesy, good taste, fine feeling, artistic powers, gentleness", speaking of the planet in general. Later astrologers describe Venus sign by sign, and your result gives the reading for yours. It is a prompt for reflection, not a prediction.

The sign and the house are two different things. The sign comes from the date: where Venus stood on the zodiac. The house comes from your birth time and place, because the twelve houses are slices of the sky measured from the horizon where you were born, and they turn all the way round in a day. This calculator gives the sign; the birth chart calculator places Venus in a house too, using the Placidus system by default.

Yes, but only by a little. Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun: the greatest distance we measured from 1950 to 2049 was 47 degrees, so your Venus is always in your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side. A Leo Sun, for example, can have Venus in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra. Mercury stays even closer, within one sign.

Venus appears to move backwards for about six weeks every nineteen months. From 1950 to 2049 that covered 7.3% of days, so roughly one person in fourteen was born with Venus retrograde. Astrologers often read it as affection and values that turn inward and are reconsidered before they are shown. It is a nuance of style, not a warning, and the sign still carries most of the description. Your result says whether yours was retrograde.

Astrologers have long used ephemerides, printed tables that list where each planet stood on every date. Because Venus changes sign roughly once a month, and retrograde loops add extra crossings, a table covering a whole lifetime is long, and the dates need adjusting for your time zone. This calculator does the lookup and the conversion from your date and place, and adds the exact degree.
