Venus in Virgo is the placement for a birth chart in which Venus was passing through Virgo, the sign of the Virgin, on the day of birth. Venus stands in astrology for affection, pleasure and what a person values; Virgo, ruled by Mercury, for precision, service and a careful eye. The combination is usually described as love expressed through small, practical acts rather than big declarations. This page brings together what Alan Leo and Sepharial wrote, the theme modern astrologers agree on, and a table from our own count of where Venus was on each day across six decades.
Venus in Virgo: an earth sign that pays attention
Virgo is one of Mercury’s two signs, the other being Gemini. Sepharial (1910) lists it among the earth signs, with Taurus and Capricorn, and among the flexed signs, his word for what most astrologers now call mutable. Earth is read as grounded and practical, mutability as adaptable. In a Venus placement that pairing is often turned into an image of love as attentiveness: noticing what someone needs, and quietly seeing to it.
Many astrologers describe the Venus sign as how a person tends to love and what they value. That is a shared belief within astrology, not a measurable fact, and this page writes it as such.
Sun signs that can have Venus in Virgo
Venus stays near the Sun. Our count of 21,915 days from 1950 to 2009, at noon UTC, never found Venus more than two signs from the Sun. So Venus in Virgo comes only with a Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra or Scorpio Sun.
| Sign | Sun here: Venus in Virgo | Sun in Virgo: Venus here |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 9.5% | 8.3% |
| Leo | 34% | 32% |
| Virgo | 24.6% | 24.6% |
| Libra | 30.5% | 25.3% |
| Scorpio | 10.3% | 9.8% |
Leo Suns carried Venus in Virgo on 34% of their days and Libra Suns on 30.5%, so between them they account for most of this placement. For a Virgo Sun, Venus was actually likelier to be in Leo (32%) or Libra (25.3%) than in Virgo (24.6%).
Among the more frequent Venus signs
Venus was in Virgo on 9.19% of all the days we counted. Only Aries (10.29%), Scorpio (9.81%) and Gemini (9.4%) came higher, so Venus in Virgo is the fourth most frequent Venus sign in our data, comfortably above the one-in-twelve average.
Venus in Virgo in the 1903 and 1910 texts
Alan Leo’s How to Judge a Nativity (1903) opens the entry that falls sixth in his Venus list, and so to Virgo, with “Pure in affection”. The book survives in a scan without its sign symbols, so the match is made by order and by the entry’s wording, which fits the sign’s traditional image of the Virgin. We quote only that opening; the rest of the entry moves into matters the site does not cover.
Sepharial’s scheme sorts planets by whether they sit in a sign they govern, where a planet “acts more strongly than usual”, or in a sign opposite one. Venus governs Taurus and Libra, and the opposite signs are Scorpio and Aries. Virgo is none of these, so in his wording alone it would be a neutral sign. Older dignity lists say more. Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos gives Venus “her exaltation in Pisces and her depression in Virgo”, and later astrologers call that second position the fall. In the tradition it marks the sign farthest from Venus’s exaltation, a label for the seat and not a verdict on how anyone loves.
How astrologers describe Venus in Virgo today
One theme ran through all four of the popular astrology pages we compared: practical and analytical. Many astrologers describe Venus in Virgo as discerning and careful in love, with high standards, a streak of perfectionism, and a way of showing affection through service and useful help.
With only one agreed theme, what follows is the view of some astrologers rather than a consensus. They describe this Venus remembering small preferences, fixing what is broken and caring through detail rather than grand gestures. The reflective question often raised is whether you let yourself and others be imperfect and still feel loved.
The mutable one of the earth trio
Virgo is the only mutable sign among the three earth signs; Taurus is fixed and Capricorn cardinal in Sepharial’s lists. That small technical difference lines up neatly with how the three are described: Venus in Virgo as adjusting and refining, Venus in Taurus as holding steady, Venus in Capricorn as building toward a goal. It also sits in a different place in the old dignity scheme: Taurus is one of Venus’s own signs, while Capricorn has no special status for Venus and Virgo is the sign of her traditional fall. And Virgo turned up more often in our count than either, on 9.19% of days against 8.08% for Capricorn and 7.18% for Taurus.
Venus in Virgo with a Leo Sun
Leo was the Sun sign that most often came with Venus in Virgo in our count. Alan Leo (1899) wrote that Leo natives are “genuinely kind, warm-hearted and loving, but usually like to express their love in action”. Set beside a Venus sign described through service and practical care, the two lines rhyme: both describe love shown by doing. Astrology offers that as an observation to reflect on, not as a conclusion about any one person.
Neighboring pages cover Venus in Leo and Venus in Libra.
Find your Venus sign
A birth date is almost always enough to find Venus. On the few dates when Venus moved into a new sign, the calculator notes it and your birth time settles the answer.
To place Venus in the wider chart, start with how to read a birth chart. The birth chart calculator shows Venus by sign and house, and Sun, Moon and rising signs explains the big three.
Questions people ask
It means Venus was in Virgo, the mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury, when you were born. Astrologers read the Venus sign as a picture of how you love and what you value, and for Virgo they describe care shown through practical help, close attention and high standards. It is a description, not a prediction.
No. In the traditional rulerships Venus governs Taurus and Libra, and Virgo belongs to Mercury. Sepharial's 1910 rule also names the signs opposite Venus's own, Scorpio and Aries, as a separate group. Virgo is in neither, but Ptolemy's older list puts Venus's depression, or fall, there.
His 1903 book How to Judge a Nativity opens the sixth Venus entry, which by list order is Virgo, with the words pure in affection. The rest of the entry goes into matters this site leaves aside. That opening fits the modern theme of care that is sincere and unshowy, and it is the one part we quote.
Yes, very often. In our count of every day from 1950 to 2009, Venus was one sign ahead of the Sun, in Virgo, on 34% of the days when the Sun was in Leo. That was the most common Sun sign for this Venus, followed by Libra at 30.5%. Cancer, Virgo and Scorpio Suns can have it too.
