Venus in Cancer is the name for a chart in which Venus was moving through Cancer, the sign of the Crab, when the person was born. Astrologers give Venus the themes of affection, pleasure and value, and give Cancer the themes of home, memory and protection. So Venus in Cancer is almost always described as a caring, nurturing way of loving that needs to feel safe first. This page collects the traditional sources, the modern themes that several astrologers agree on, and a count of our own showing which Sun signs can carry this Venus.
Venus in Cancer: tenderness in the Moon’s sign
Cancer is the sign the Moon governs. Sepharial (1910) put it in one line: “The Moon governs Cancer”. He also listed it among the water signs, with Scorpio and Pisces, and among the movable or cardinal ones. Water is read as emotional and receptive; the cardinal quality as a sign that starts things. That second part is easy to miss next to the sign’s soft reputation.
Sepharial listed “gentleness” among the qualities Venus confers, and Cancer is where many astrologers expect that gentleness to show most plainly.
Across popular astrology, the Venus sign is read as how a person loves and what they value. That is a belief, not a finding, and it frames everything below.
Which Sun signs can have Venus in Cancer
Venus is tied to the Sun’s neighborhood. In our count of all 21,915 days from 1950 to 2009, taken at noon UTC, Venus was never more than two signs away from the Sun. That means Venus in Cancer can only belong to a Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo or Virgo Sun.
| Sign | Sun here: Venus in Cancer | Sun in Cancer: Venus here |
|---|---|---|
| Taurus | 7.7% | 7.9% |
| Gemini | 27.8% | 34.8% |
| Cancer | 20.4% | 20.4% |
| Leo | 27.4% | 27.4% |
| Virgo | 8.3% | 9.5% |
Gemini and Leo Suns had Venus in Cancer on nearly the same share of their days, a little over a quarter each. For someone with a Cancer Sun, the right column shows Venus was more likely to be in Gemini (34.8%) than in Cancer (20.4%).
A slightly less common Venus sign
Venus was in Cancer on 7.84% of the days we counted, a little under the one-in-twelve average of about 8.33%. Four signs hosted Venus less often, down to Sagittarius at 6.91%, and seven more often, up to Aries at 10.29%.
Alan Leo and Sepharial on Venus in Cancer
Alan Leo’s How to Judge a Nativity (1903) gives the fourth Venus entry, the one that by list order belongs to Cancer, a mixed opening. It calls the love affairs fickle, then names a “love of home”. The scanned copy lost the sign headings, so the match comes from the list’s order and the entry’s own wording. The second phrase is the one that still sounds current, since home remains central to modern descriptions of this Venus.
Sepharial’s rule for how a planet fares by sign is short. In a sign it governs, it “acts more strongly than usual”, and he gave another name to the signs opposite. Venus governs Taurus and Libra; Scorpio and Aries face them. Cancer is in neither group, so under his wording Venus here has no special status, and its character comes from the sign. Later tables give Cancer to the Moon and note no dignity for Venus there.
How astrologers describe Venus in Cancer today
Of the four popular astrology pages we compared, all four described Venus in Cancer as nurturing and protective. Three also stressed emotional sensitivity and intuition, and three described a wish for a secure, shared sanctuary, love as a safe place. Those three themes are the modern consensus for this placement, in our words.
Some astrologers add that this Venus shows care by looking after people, remembering what matters to them and creating a sense of home, and that it is cautious at the start and devoted once trust is there. The reflective question they attach is a practical one: how clearly do you ask for the care you give so easily?
Cancer as the cardinal water Venus
Cancer opens the water trio in Sepharial’s list, and it is the only cardinal one: Scorpio is fixed and Pisces flexed. Compared with its two siblings, Venus in Cancer is the one most tied to a place, the home, where Scorpio is tied to depth and privacy and Pisces to sympathy and imagination. The dignity picture differs as well. Cancer has no special status for Venus in the traditional tables, Pisces is the sign of her exaltation, and Scorpio faces Taurus, one of Venus’s own signs. In our count, Venus was in Scorpio far more often (9.81% of days) than in Cancer (7.84%) or Pisces (7.01%).
Venus in Cancer with a Leo Sun
In our count, Gemini (27.8%) and Leo (27.4%) Suns carried Venus in Cancer on almost the same share of days, so either could stand here. Take Leo. Alan Leo (1899) described Leo natives as “genuinely kind, warm-hearted and loving, but usually like to express their love in action”. Beside a Venus sign read as protective and home-centered, that gives two descriptions that point the same way from different angles, one outward and one inward. How they balance in a real chart is a matter for the whole chart.

Find your Venus sign
The birth date alone places Venus on almost every day. On the days when it changed sign, the calculator marks the change and a birth time settles which sign is yours.
Venus is easier to read beside the Moon, which in Cancer shares many of the same themes. The guide to Sun, Moon and rising signs explains the difference, and the birth chart calculator gives you both. The fourth house, the one astrologers tie most closely to home, is covered in the guide to the houses.
Questions people ask
Astrologers describe it as gentle and indirect rather than bold. The popular picture is of someone who shows interest through care and attention, making another person feel looked after, and who takes time before opening up. That is a traditional description of a style, not a script, and real people vary widely.
Venus is the planet astrologers associate with affection, pleasure, beauty and values. Sepharial, writing in 1910, credited it with good taste, fine feeling and artistic powers. Its sign in your chart is read as the style in which you love and enjoy things, and its house as the area of life where that shows.
No, though they share a sign and some themes. The Moon is read as your emotional needs and what comforts you, while Venus is read as how you love and what you value. Both in Cancer lean toward care and home, but astrologers treat them as two separate placements with separate jobs.
Gemini and Leo, almost equally. In our count of every day from 1950 to 2009, Venus was in Cancer on 27.8% of Gemini days and 27.4% of Leo days. A Cancer Sun shared the sign on 20.4% of days, and Taurus and Virgo Suns only occasionally, under 9% each.
