Venus in Sagittarius: Meaning in Your Birth Chart

Venus in Sagittarius, the least common Venus sign in our count: Alan Leo's 1903 words, Sepharial's rule, and the five Sun signs that can carry it.

Last updated September 29, 2026

Venus in Sagittarius is the placement astrologers name when Venus was in Sagittarius, the sign of the Archer, or in Sepharial’s older wording the Hunter, at the moment of birth. Venus is read as the planet of affection, pleasure and what you value; Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, as the sign of distance, freedom and big questions. The result is usually described as love with a wide horizon. On this page: what the older texts say, why the modern sources do not agree on one theme, and a count of our own that turns up something unexpected: of all twelve Venus signs, this is the one Venus visited least.

Venus in Sagittarius: a Jupiter sign of open horizons

Sagittarius belongs to Jupiter in the traditional rulerships, as Pisces does. Sepharial (1910) lists it as the third fire sign, after Aries and Leo, and as one of the flexed or mutable signs. Fire is read as enthusiasm, mutability as changeability. For Venus, that mix is usually turned into an image of affection that likes movement and does not like to be pinned down.

The frame for all of this is a popular belief: that the Venus sign describes how you love and what you value. Many astrologers hold it; nobody has measured it. We write it as belief.

Sun signs that can have Venus in Sagittarius

Venus is never far from the Sun. On every one of the 21,915 days from 1950 to 2009 that we checked, at noon UTC, Venus was at most two signs away. So Venus in Sagittarius goes only with a Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius Sun.

Sign Sun here: Venus in Sagittarius Sun in Sagittarius: Venus here
Libra 6.7% 7.2%
Scorpio 24.1% 33.2%
Sagittarius 21% 21%
Capricorn 24.9% 28.1%
Aquarius 8.4% 10.5%

The middle column is flatter than for most signs: no Sun sign had Venus in Sagittarius on more than a quarter of its days. For a Sagittarius Sun, the right column shows Venus was most often in Scorpio (33.2%), then Capricorn (28.1%), and in Sagittarius itself on 21%.

The least common Venus sign in our count

Venus was in Sagittarius on 6.91% of the days we counted, the lowest share of any sign. Libra (6.98%) and Pisces (7.01%) were close; Aries was highest at 10.29%. Fewer birth dates carry this Venus than any other, which is a fact about the sky’s timing and says nothing about the people who have it.

What Alan Leo and Sepharial wrote

Alan Leo’s How to Judge a Nativity (1903) opens its ninth Venus entry, by list order Sagittarius, with “Light-hearted and impressionable; fond of pleasure”. The scanned edition lost the sign symbols, so the entry is matched by position, and its buoyant tone fits the sign’s long-standing image.

Sepharial’s sorting rule turns on the signs a planet governs. In one of them, he wrote, a planet “acts more strongly than usual”, and he set the opposite signs apart under a different name. For Venus the own signs are Taurus and Libra and the opposite signs Scorpio and Aries. Sagittarius is none of the four, so in his wording Venus here sits in a neutral sign, and the sign’s own character does the describing. The usual dignity tables list nothing for Venus in Sagittarius either.

How astrologers describe Venus in Sagittarius now

We compared four popular astrology pages on this placement, and no theme appeared on three of them. Freedom and adventure came up on two, which is not enough for us to call it a consensus. So the older words above carry more weight here than on most Venus pages.

Some astrologers describe Venus in Sagittarius as loving freedom, exploration and honesty, and as generous and open-hearted in affection. In that reading, shared discovery, whether through travel, ideas or humor, matters a great deal, and space is valued as much as closeness. The reflective question usually attached is how the wish for independence sits beside the steadiness that deepens any bond over time.

How it differs from the other fire Venus signs

Fire is the element Venus in Sagittarius shares with Aries and Leo, and the old texts treat the three differently. Alan Leo’s 1903 entries use the word ardent for both Aries and Leo, while Sagittarius gets lighter words: light-hearted, impressionable, fond of pleasure. Sepharial’s scheme splits them too: Aries is one of Venus’s two opposite signs, while Leo and Sagittarius are neutral. On the modern side, only Leo has themes that three of the four pages we read agreed on. Sagittarius and Aries, the first and last fire signs, both lack a modern consensus, which is a useful reminder of how much popular astrology varies from site to site.

Venus in Sagittarius beside a Scorpio Sun

Capricorn and Scorpio Suns carried Venus in Sagittarius on almost the same share of days in our count, 24.9% and 24.1%. Take Scorpio, where Venus sits one sign ahead of the Sun. Alan Leo (1899) wrote of Scorpio that “in this sign there appears to be more scope for extremes of character than in any other”. Next to a Venus sign he called light-hearted, that gives a sharp contrast in tone, intensity beside buoyancy. Astrology presents such pairs for reflection and leaves the outcome to the full chart.

Find your Venus sign

The birth date is enough to place Venus on nearly every day. When Venus changed sign on the date itself, the calculator points it out and asks for a birth time.

To see Venus by house as well as sign, use the birth chart calculator and read the houses guide. The big three are explained in Sun, Moon and rising signs.

Questions people ask

Astrology does not sort placements into good and bad. In Sepharial's 1910 scheme, Sagittarius is neither one of Venus's own signs nor one opposite them, so it is neutral ground. Alan Leo in 1903 described it as light-hearted and fond of pleasure, which is a description of a style, not a mark out of ten.

Astrologers read the sign as the style and the house as the setting. The 5th house is traditionally linked with play, creativity and romance, so Venus in Sagittarius there is described as that open, light-hearted style showing up in leisure and creative life. Finding the house requires an accurate birth time.

It is the least common Venus sign in our data. Of 21,915 days from 1950 to 2009, Venus was in Sagittarius on 6.91% of them, just under Libra at 6.98%. Aries was the most common at 10.29%. Less common only means fewer birth dates carry it; astrology attaches no value to that.

Only Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius, since Venus stays within two signs of the Sun. In our count, Capricorn Suns had it on 24.9% of their days and Scorpio Suns on 24.1%, with Sagittarius at 21%. Aquarius and Libra Suns had it far less often.
