The six core numbers

Numerologists usually start with a handful of numbers. Two come from the birth date and describe the path: the life path, the central theme, and the birthday number, a supporting gift. Three come from the birth name and describe the person walking it: the expression (all letters), the soul urge (vowels) and the personality (consonants). The sixth, the personal year, changes every January and tells you where you are in a nine-year cycle.

We use the Pythagorean system, the one most common in the English-speaking world, and keep the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Our methodology page explains every choice, including where traditions disagree, and our guide to Pythagorean vs Chaldean numerology sets the two letter tables side by side. For the year ahead, numerology 2027 explains the 11/2 universal year. Two labels that come up along the way, master numbers and karmic debt numbers, each have a guide of their own.

The triples from 000 to 999: how numerology reads each one, with its sources, our arithmetic and what popular guides say. Every other angel number, from 1010 to 9999, is grouped on the repeating numbers page, and the angel number calculator finds the one your birth date points to.

Questions people ask

The core numbers come from two things: your full birth date and your full name at birth. The life path adds the reduced month, day and year of your birth. The expression number adds the Pythagorean value of every letter in your name (A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on), the soul urge uses only the vowels, and the personality number only the consonants. Each total is reduced to one digit, except the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. The calculator on this page does all of it at once and shows the working.

The arithmetic can be exact, and ours is tested: two careful calculators will give you the same numbers. The meaning is a different kind of thing. Numerology is a symbolic tradition, with roots that practitioners trace to Pythagoras and a modern form shaped in the early twentieth century, and what it offers is a way of reading a name and a date as a story. Numerology is not a science, and we present it as a tradition to think with.

Numerology is real as a tradition: people have practiced it for a very long time, in different cultures and systems, and its methods are consistent enough that two careful calculators give the same numbers. Many people find its descriptions a useful prompt for thinking about themselves, and a quiet ritual worth keeping. It is not a science, and we present it as a tradition to think with, for reflection and entertainment.

A chatbot can explain numerology and will usually describe the numbers fluently, but it can slip on the arithmetic, especially with long names, the letter Y and master numbers. A dedicated calculator is more reliable for the numbers themselves. Ours runs the same tested code every time and shows each step, so you can check the result by hand.
