Venus in Leo describes a birth chart in which Venus was passing through Leo, the sign of the Lion, at the moment of birth. Astrologers link Venus with affection, pleasure and values, and Leo with warmth, pride and the wish to be seen, so it is no surprise that the placement is usually described as love with the lights on. What follows sets the older texts beside the modern consensus and adds something most pages on this placement do not have: a count, day by day, of which Sun signs Venus in Leo can actually belong to.
Venus in Leo: love in the sign of the Sun
Leo is the one sign the Sun rules. Sepharial (1910) puts it plainly: “Leo is governed by the Sun.” He also lists it with Aries and Sagittarius as a fire sign, and with Taurus, Scorpio and Aquarius as a fixed one. Fire is read as enthusiasm and expression; fixity as persistence. Venus working through that mix is said to give affection that is both bright and loyal, slow to cool once it is lit.
Many astrologers today treat the Venus sign as a portrait of how someone loves and what they value. That is a belief shared across popular astrology, not something that can be checked, and it is the lens this page uses.
The five Sun signs that can have Venus in Leo
Venus and the Sun travel together. We checked the position of both on every day between 1950 and 2009, 21,915 days in all at noon UTC, and Venus was never more than two signs from the Sun. So only a Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra Sun can come with Venus in Leo.
| Sign | Sun here: Venus in Leo | Sun in Leo: Venus here |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 8.8% | 9.9% |
| Cancer | 27.4% | 27.4% |
| Leo | 21.5% | 21.5% |
| Virgo | 32% | 34% |
| Libra | 8.8% | 7.3% |
The middle column is the one to read if you know your Sun sign: a Virgo Sun had Venus in Leo on almost a third of days. The right column is for Leo Suns, whose Venus was most often in Virgo (34%) and only on about one day in five in Leo itself.
How often Venus is in Leo
Of all the days we counted, Venus was in Leo on 8.39%, almost exactly the one-in-twelve share an even spread would give. Five signs held Venus more often, led by Aries at 10.29%, and the least frequent was Sagittarius at 6.91%.
Venus in Leo in Alan Leo and Sepharial
Alan Leo’s How to Judge a Nativity (1903) opens its Leo entry for Venus with “Ardent in affection, extravagant, and fond of social display.” The sign symbols did not survive in the scanned copy, so the entry is placed by its fifth position in his list, and its wording matches the sign closely. It is the most vivid of his twelve openings and the one modern descriptions echo most directly.
For Sepharial, the question was whether a planet sat in a sign it governs, where it “acts more strongly than usual”, or in one opposite such a sign. Venus governs Taurus and Libra; opposite them lie Scorpio and Aries. Leo is none of these, so by his wording Venus in Leo falls into neither of his two special groups. In the classical scheme it is likewise a placement with no special dignity, since the tradition keeps Leo for the Sun.
How astrologers describe Venus in Leo now
On the popular astrology sites we compared, two themes appeared on three of the four pages. The first is warmth with a sense of theatre: many astrologers describe Venus in Leo as treating romance a little like a performance and as needing appreciation to feel secure. The second is a romantic, big-hearted glow that spreads to the people nearby, which some sites link to the Sun’s rulership of the sign.
Some astrologers describe a generous and expressive way of loving, with room for celebration, grand gestures and a creative streak in how pleasure is enjoyed. Loyalty is part of the picture too. The question the placement is said to raise is what happens when affection arrives more quietly than expected, and whether quiet care still counts.
When the Sun and Venus are both in Leo
About one Leo Sun in five also has Venus in Leo: 21.5% of Leo days in our count. Astrologers call this a doubled emphasis, since the sign then colors both the core identity the Sun describes and the affections Venus describes. Because Leo is the Sun’s own sign, a Leo Sun with a Leo Venus puts both planets under the same ruler. Astrology reads that as a concentrated picture rather than a better or worse one, and the rest of the chart, from the Moon to the rising sign, still shapes how it shows.
Venus in Leo and a Virgo Sun
The Sun sign that most often carried Venus in Leo in our count was Virgo. Alan Leo (1899) wrote that Virgo natives “are the most critical of all individuals, but they usually turn this criticism also upon themselves.” Placed beside a Leo Venus, that sentence shows a contrast astrologers like to point out: a Sun sign known for careful self-scrutiny with a Venus sign known for open warmth. Astrology does not rule on how the two get along inside one person; it offers them as two voices in the same chart.

Find your Venus sign
In most cases your birth date alone gives your Venus sign, since Venus moves slowly compared with the Moon. On the rare days it changed sign, the calculator says so and uses your birth time to decide.
To see Venus alongside the placements most people learn first, read about your Sun, Moon and rising signs. The birth chart calculator adds the house, and the guide to the twelve houses explains what each one covers.
Questions people ask
Astrology does not rank placements as good or bad. In Sepharial's 1910 scheme, Venus's own signs are Taurus and Libra and the signs opposite them are Scorpio and Aries, so Leo is neutral ground. Astrologers today describe Venus in Leo as warm, generous and a little dramatic, which is a style rather than a grade.
It means Venus was in Leo, the fixed fire sign ruled by the Sun, when you were born. Read through the popular idea that a Venus sign shows how you love and what you value, it describes affection that is open, generous and happy to celebrate. Alan Leo called it ardent in 1903.
Astrologers say it changes where the placement shows up, not its sign character. Venus in Leo in the 10th house is read through work and public life, in the 11th through friends and groups, and so on. You need a birth time to know the house, because the houses turn with the clock.
Virgo, in our count of every day from 1950 to 2009. On 32% of the days when the Sun was in Virgo, Venus was one sign behind it in Leo. Cancer came next at 27.4% and Leo itself at 21.5%. Gemini and Libra Suns can have Venus in Leo too, but far less often.
