Capricorn rising means the sign of the Goat was ascending over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. The point is called the Ascendant, and astrologers read it as your outward bearing and the way you meet the world, which can differ from the Sun sign given by your birthday. This page sets out Alan Leo’s 1903 description of Capricorn rising, the trait modern astrologers most often agree on, our own figures for how long Capricorn takes to rise, and where to check your chart. It is astrological tradition, for reflection and entertainment.
What Capricorn rising means
Sepharial’s 1910 handbook explains the Ascendant simply as “the degree which is rising” when a person is born. The sign holding that degree is the rising sign, and since the whole zodiac passes the eastern horizon each day, it takes a birth time to know which one it was.
Capricorn on the Ascendant brings earth and the cardinal mode together. Sepharial writes the sign as Capricornus, lists it with Taurus and Virgo as earth and among the movable signs, and states that “Saturn governs Aquarius and Capricornus”. So Capricorn is the one earth sign that is also cardinal, and one of only two signs ruled by Saturn in the traditional scheme.
Capricorn rising shortens to 92 minutes at 60 N
We computed how long each sign spends rising over one sidereal day, using 21 June 2001, and checked it against 21 December 2001. The figures matched, because rising times depend on latitude, not the date. Capricorn’s:
| Latitude | Nearby, roughly | Hours | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | the equator | 2.14 | 128 |
| 25.8 N | Miami | 2.01 | 121 |
| 34.05 N | Los Angeles | 1.96 | 118 |
| 40.7 N | New York | 1.91 | 115 |
| 47.6 N | Seattle | 1.83 | 110 |
| 51.5 N | London | 1.77 | 106 |
| 60 N | Oslo | 1.53 | 92 |
Capricorn is one of the four longest risers on the equator, at 2.14 hours, and it slips just under the average once you are north of Miami. The decline is gradual: an hour and three quarters at London’s latitude, about an hour and a half at 60 N. Gemini is its mirror across the Aries point, and in the Northern Hemisphere the two share every figure in this table. Head south instead and Capricorn lengthens, reaching 2.32 hours at 33.87 S, around Sydney.
At 40.7 N the Capricorn window works out at about 8% of the day, almost exactly the share every sign would have if the twelve rose evenly. In practice, Capricorn is a middle-sized window almost everywhere. It is less forgiving than the long Leo to Scorpio stretch, but nothing like as tight as Aries or Pisces in the north.
Precise Sun, persevering Ascendant: Alan Leo on Capricorn
Two descriptions, two layers
Alan Leo described Capricorn Sun people, in Astrology for All (1899), as those who “are impartial, just and accurate, aiming to be precise, exact and constant”. For the rising sign, in How to Judge a Nativity (1903), he wrote that Capricorn “rising denotes an ambitious, persevering, plodding and persistent disposition”.
Accuracy and fairness in the Sun sign; ambition and staying power on the Ascendant. The first is about standards a person holds inwardly. The second is about how they move through the world, one steady step after another, which is how Alan Leo generally set the rising sign apart from the Sun.
Ambitious and disciplined, in modern readings
The description modern guides share most is close to Alan Leo’s own: many astrologers describe Capricorn rising as ambitious and disciplined, serious about goals and willing to work toward them patiently. It is a popular reading, not a finding, and it is the only theme broad agreement supports for this Ascendant.
Capricorn rising and the tenth house
Capricorn is the tenth sign, and its natural house is the tenth, associated with vocation, public life and reputation. Alan Leo’s reminder for every rising sign was to “pay special attention to the corresponding house”, so a Capricorn Ascendant draws the eye to the tenth house, at the top of the chart.
Look across the chart as well. Whenever Capricorn is rising, Cancer is on the Descendant, the western point where the seventh house begins, so one of Saturn’s signs and the Moon’s sign face each other across the horizon: the mirror image of a Cancer rising chart.
In Whole Sign houses, Capricorn is your entire first house. In Placidus, which Wikipedia describes as “the most commonly used house system in modern Western astrology”, the first house begins at the exact rising degree and its width varies with latitude. The houses guide explains why the systems disagree.
Capricorn rising between Sagittarius and Aquarius
The rising signs arrive in order: Sagittarius rising, then Capricorn, then Aquarius rising. At 40.7 N, their windows are 2.37, 1.91 and 1.43 hours. Each is noticeably shorter than the one before, as the sky moves from the slow signs toward the quick ones around Aries.
A mid-sized window leaves some margin, but not much at the edges. If your Ascendant sits in the first or last few degrees of Capricorn, a few minutes either way on the birth record can change the answer.
Confirm a Capricorn Ascendant
Give the calculator your birth date, your birth time as precisely as it was recorded, and your birthplace, which fixes the latitude and time zone.
Without a birth time, the rising sign has to stay open, though your Sun and Moon are still available through the birth chart calculator. The guide to Sun, Moon and rising signs shows how the three work as a set.
Questions people ask
Possibly more than one. A Capricorn Sun comes from a birthday roughly from late December to late January. A Capricorn Moon depends on the date, and occasionally the hour. Capricorn rising depends on the exact time and place of birth, so a rising sign calculator is the way to confirm it.
Astrologers describe Capricorn rising as ambitious and disciplined, and Alan Leo in 1903 called the disposition persevering and persistent. Tradition also gives the sign to Saturn. No rising sign is ranked above another, though: these are traditional descriptions, offered for reflection, and the rest of the chart shapes how they read.
A little below average in the north. We computed 1.91 hours for Capricorn to rise at 40.7 N, a touch under the two-hour mean, and 1.53 hours at 60 N. At the equator it is one of the longest at 2.14 hours, and near Sydney it takes 2.32, so it depends on birthplace.
Saturn, in traditional astrology. Sepharial, in his 1910 textbook, wrote that Saturn governs Aquarius and Capricornus, his Latin spelling of Capricorn. Some astrologers who read chart rulers look at where Saturn falls by sign and house as a further note on a Capricorn Ascendant.
