Sagittarius Rising: The Sagittarius Ascendant

Sagittarius rising in Alan Leo's 1903 reading and modern astrology, plus our figures for how long Sagittarius takes to rise at seven northern latitudes.

Last updated September 29, 2026

Sagittarius rising means that Sagittarius, the sign of the Archer, was coming up on the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. The point is called the Ascendant, and astrologers read it as your outward manner and the way you approach new situations, separate from the Sun sign that your birthday determines. On this page: Alan Leo’s 1903 words on Sagittarius rising and how they differ from his Sun-sign portrait, the theme modern astrologers most agree on, our measurements of how long Sagittarius takes to rise, and how to find out if it is yours. It is astrological tradition, for reflection and entertainment.

What Sagittarius rising means

A birth chart turns on its Ascendant: the sign rising in the east is where the first house starts and where every other house is counted from. Sagittarius in that spot gives the chart a fire sign of the mutable mode. In Sepharial’s 1910 lists, Sagittarius joins Aries and Leo as fire, sits among the “flexed” (mutable) signs, and belongs to Jupiter, since “Jupiter governs Pisces and Sagittarius”.

That makes the Sagittarius Ascendant the only fire rising sign ruled by Jupiter. Aries and Leo, the other fire signs, have Mars and the Sun. Its immediate neighbours differ too: Scorpio is water under Mars, and Capricorn is earth under Saturn.

How long Sagittarius rises: 142 minutes at 40.7 N

Our calculation traced one sidereal day on 21 June 2001 and measured the time each sign spent rising in the east, then repeated the exercise for 21 December 2001. The two dates gave matching answers, because the durations are a matter of latitude, not season. For Sagittarius:

Latitude About Hours Minutes
0 the equator 2.14 128
25.8 N Miami 2.27 136
34.05 N Los Angeles 2.32 139
40.7 N New York 2.37 142
47.6 N Seattle 2.45 147
51.5 N London 2.51 151
60 N Oslo 2.75 165

Sagittarius is above average everywhere in this table, and it grows gently with latitude, from 2.14 hours on the equator to 2.75 at 60 N. The growth is gentler than for Leo or Libra, so the Sagittarius window stays generous without becoming the longest. Its mirror sign is Cancer: they lie at equal distances either side of the Aries point, and north of the equator their times are identical. Below the equator things invert, and at 33.87 S, around Sydney, we measured 1.96 hours for Sagittarius.

The implication is reassuring for anyone born in North America or Europe: a Sagittarius Ascendant is not a narrow window, and a birth time recorded to the nearest quarter hour is usually enough unless the degree sits near a boundary.

Aiming high, open-minded: Alan Leo on Sagittarius

Contrasting his 1899 and 1903 entries

On the Sun in Sagittarius, in Astrology for All (1899), Alan Leo wrote that “of these individuals it may be said that they always aim for the highest”. Four years on, describing the rising sign in How to Judge a Nativity (1903), he said Sagittarius “rising denotes an open-minded, honest, sympathetic and generous disposition”.

The Sun passage speaks about aspiration, what a person reaches for. The rising passage speaks about how they treat others along the way: frank, fair, warm and giving. Both describe a large outlook, but the Ascendant entry turns it outward into conduct.

Adventurous and free, in modern readings

One theme recurs across modern guides: many astrologers describe Sagittarius rising as adventurous and freedom-loving, drawn to exploring and uneasy with being boxed in. That is the only description widely shared among them, and it fits easily beside Alan Leo’s “open-minded”.

Sagittarius rising and the ninth house of meaning

Sagittarius is the ninth sign, and the ninth house is its natural counterpart: travel, higher learning, belief and the search for a wider view. Alan Leo asked readers of each rising sign to “pay special attention to the corresponding house”, so with Sagittarius rising the ninth house becomes a second focus next to the first.

On the far side of the wheel, Gemini sits on the Descendant, the western point where the seventh house begins. That places the two signs tradition gives to Jupiter and Mercury, Sagittarius and Gemini, at opposite ends of the horizon line.

How big your first house is comes down to the house system. Whole Sign houses make Sagittarius the whole first house. Quadrant systems such as Placidus start the first house at the exact rising degree, and Wikipedia’s article on houses admits that “each one represents a different compromise”. The houses in astrology guide sets out the options.

Where the windows shrink: Sagittarius between Scorpio and Capricorn

In the sky’s daily order, Scorpio rising comes first, Sagittarius next and Capricorn rising after. At 40.7 N those windows are 2.55, 2.37 and 1.91 hours. Sagittarius is where the northern day begins to speed up again, dropping from the long signs around Libra toward the short ones around Aries.

For a borderline birth time, check the degree. An Ascendant in the first or last few degrees of Sagittarius sits close enough to Scorpio or Capricorn that a recording error of a few minutes could matter.

Work out whether you have Sagittarius rising

Enter your birth date, the birth time as exactly as you know it, and your birthplace, which gives the calculator your latitude and time zone.

With no time, the Ascendant cannot be placed, though your Sun and Moon still can through the birth chart calculator. To see how all three signs relate, read the guide to Sun, Moon and rising signs.

Questions people ask

Being a Sagittarius Sun does not fix your rising sign; any of the twelve is possible. The rising sign turns with the time of day, so you need your birth time and place. Around sunrise it is often Sagittarius itself or a sign next to it, and later in the day it moves on through the zodiac.

Only a little. Sagittarius rises once every day of the year, so every birthday has a Sagittarius rising window. The date just moves that window to a different hour. What decides it is the time on your birth record and where you were born.

It means Sagittarius was on the eastern horizon when you were born, so it colors the Ascendant, the point astrologers read as outward manner. Tradition gives the sign to Jupiter and the element fire. Alan Leo in 1903 called the disposition open-minded, honest, sympathetic and generous.

About a tenth of it at mid-northern latitudes. Our calculation gives 2.37 hours at 40.7 N, which is close to 10% of a full turn of the sky, compared with about 8.3% if all twelve signs took equal time. Near the equator it is 2.14 hours, and near Sydney 1.96.
