Scorpio rising means Scorpio, the sign of the Scorpion, was on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. Astrologers call this point the Ascendant and read it as your outward manner, the impression you give before people know you, which can be far from your Sun sign. This page covers Alan Leo’s 1903 description of Scorpio rising, the two themes modern astrologers most often repeat, our own figures for how long Scorpio takes to rise at different latitudes, and how to check your chart. Everything here is astrological tradition, offered for reflection and entertainment.
What Scorpio rising means
Your rising sign is the one sign of the twelve that was coming up in the east at your birth minute, which is why it needs an exact time while the Sun sign only needs a date. Scorpio in that position makes the first house a water sign of the fixed mode. Sepharial (1910) sorts Scorpio with Cancer and Pisces as water, lists it among the fixed signs, and writes that “Mars governs Aries and Scorpio”.
The pairing with Mars is what distinguishes this Ascendant from the other water signs. Cancer has the Moon as ruler, Pisces has Jupiter; Scorpio alone of the three is given to Mars, the same planet tradition assigns to fiery Aries.
Scorpio rising takes over two and a half hours at New York’s latitude
We followed the eastern horizon for one sidereal day on 21 June 2001 and measured how long each sign took to rise, then repeated it for 21 December 2001. The two sets agreed: rising times track latitude, not the date. Scorpio’s windows are among the longest in the north:
| Place (roughly) | Latitude | Hours | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equator | 0 | 1.99 | 119 |
| Miami | 25.8 N | 2.29 | 137 |
| Los Angeles | 34.05 N | 2.42 | 145 |
| New York | 40.7 N | 2.55 | 153 |
| Seattle | 47.6 N | 2.71 | 163 |
| London | 51.5 N | 2.83 | 170 |
| Oslo or Anchorage | 60 N | 3.25 | 195 |
Leo is Scorpio’s mirror sign across the Aries point, so north of the equator the two rise for exactly the same length of time, and at 40.7 N and 60 N they share the longest window in the zodiac. At the equator Scorpio is almost exactly two hours, the average. South of the equator the pattern flips, and at 33.87 S, near Sydney, Scorpio rises in 1.56 hours.
What that means for you: a Scorpio Ascendant in the northern US or Europe is a wide target. A birth time that is off by a quarter of an hour is unlikely to move it, unless the degree sits right at the start or end of the sign.
Reserved and shrewd: Alan Leo on Scorpio rising
The Sun sign and the Ascendant compared
Writing on the Sun in Scorpio in Astrology for All (1899), Alan Leo observed that “in this sign there appears to be more scope for extremes of character than in any other”. His entry for the rising sign in How to Judge a Nativity (1903) is more specific: Scorpio “rising denotes a reserved, shrewd, secretive and proud disposition”.
The 1899 line is about range, the idea that Scorpio people can go far in either direction. The 1903 line is about how a person holds themselves in company: guarded, perceptive and self-possessed. Read gently, as we read it here, “secretive” describes someone who shares slowly, not someone with anything to hide.
Self-assured and curious in modern readings
Two themes turn up across many modern guides. Many astrologers describe Scorpio rising as confident and quietly proud, with a strong presence, and also as curious, wanting to know what sits under the surface of a person or a situation. These are popular beliefs rather than findings, and the first of them echoes Alan Leo’s “proud” quite closely.
Scorpio rising and the eighth house
Scorpio is the eighth sign, and the house of the same number is the eighth, which modern astrologers link with shared resources, trust and deep change. Alan Leo told readers of his rising-sign list to “pay special attention to the corresponding house”, so a Scorpio Ascendant sends attention to the eighth house as well.
The first house follows the house system you use. A Whole Sign chart makes all of Scorpio the first house. Placidus and the other quadrant systems begin the first house at the exact rising degree, so with an Ascendant at 20 degrees Scorpio, much of that first house lies in Sagittarius. Wikipedia’s overview of house systems says plainly that “It is impossible for any system to satisfy all the criteria completely”. The guide to the twelve houses compares the two approaches.
Scorpio rising between Libra and Sagittarius
The daily order runs Libra rising, then Scorpio, then Sagittarius rising. At 40.7 N those windows are 2.52, 2.55 and 2.37 hours. From Scorpio onward the windows start to shorten again, heading toward the quick signs around Aries.
If your Ascendant falls in the first or last couple of degrees of Scorpio, check the birth time before relying on the reading. Otherwise the long window gives a comfortable margin.
See whether Scorpio is your rising sign
The calculator needs your birth date, your birth time as precisely as it was recorded, and your birthplace, which sets the latitude and time zone.
Without a birth time the rising sign cannot be found, but your Sun and Moon can: use the birth chart calculator. The guide to Sun, Moon and rising signs explains how the three layers relate.
Questions people ask
It depends on the birthplace. North of the equator Aries and Pisces have the briefest windows, 0.88 hours each at 51.5 N by our calculation. South of it Virgo and Libra are briefest, about 1.33 hours near Sydney. Scorpio is among the least rare in the north, with 2.55 hours at 40.7 N.
Not in the everyday sense. When people say they are a Scorpio they usually mean the Sun sign, which comes from a birthday in roughly late October to late November. Scorpio rising comes from the hour and place of birth instead, and a person can have it with any Sun sign at all.
Mars. Sepharial, writing in 1910, says Mars governs Aries and Scorpio, so the two share a ruler while differing in element: Aries is fire and Scorpio is water. Some astrologers who follow rulers read the placement of Mars as extra detail on a Scorpio Ascendant.
Rising times follow latitude, and in the north the signs around Libra take longer to clear the eastern horizon the farther you go from the equator. Our figure for Scorpio is 2.55 hours at 40.7 N and 3.25 hours at 60 N. South of the equator the geometry reverses, and near Sydney Scorpio needs only 1.56 hours.
