North Node in the 7th House: Meaning and South Node in 1st

What astrologers say a North Node in the 7th house means, how they read the South Node in the 1st, and our counts of how often the node falls there.

Last updated September 30, 2026

The North Node in the 7th house is the Moon’s ascending node falling in the chart’s seventh house, the one that begins at the western horizon. The short form on many pages is 7th house North Node. The node is a calculated point rather than a planet, and the North Node guide covers what it is. Here the subject is partnership as a topic: what modern astrologers say about this house, the South Node opposite it in the 1st, and how often the node lands here in our own counts. It is tradition and belief for reflection, with no forecast of anyone’s relationships.

What the seventh house covers

Astrologers read this house for one-to-one relating. Sepharial, in 1910, gave it “contracts, agreements, partners, and matters of exchange”, and Alan Leo, in 1903, listed “partnerships, individual character”. Both older lists also name marriage as a classical topic of the house. That is a subject the house covers, not something a placement in it announces. The 7th house page has the house in full.

North Node in the 7th house: growth through partnership

A node’s house, in modern astrology, marks the area of life where its growth theme plays out. Many guides describe this one as growth through partnership and reciprocity: learning what one-to-one relating asks, meeting the needs of another person, and sharing decisions. Six sites we read describe it in compatible words.

The sign is a separate layer, set by the year of birth and found with the North Node calculator. In the natural order of the wheel the seventh house matches Libra, and some guides lean on Libra words here, but North Node in Libra is a different placement.

Wider than romance

Several guides stress that the house reaches past romance. One describes it as negotiated reality, where two wills meet and neither simply overrides the other. Another lists business partnerships, and a third mentions contracts. One guide says outright that the placement does not mean anyone needs a partner to be whole. Comparing two people’s charts is a separate subject, which the synastry guide covers.

The South Node in the 1st house: the familiar end

Across the wheel from the 7th house is the 1st, where the South Node sits. In all 21,025 charts of our sample (1950 to 2009, 40.71 N, mean node), it was in the 1st house under both Placidus and Whole Sign, without one exception. Many guides describe the 1st house end as familiar self-reliance: trusting your own read of things, moving first, deciding alone. One page calls it a lone-wolf reflex, another warns against egocentrism born of fear of losing independence. The axis read from the other end is on North Node in the 1st house.

The past-life framing appears in some guides, and one site’s past-life section casts the 1st house end as an earlier life spent at the center of attention. It is one view, and the guides that read the South Node as habit describe the same end without it.

Self and other: the balance the guides describe

The guides describe a balance and not a choice of one end. One page frames it as the pursuit of harmony set against self-development. Another names keeping a balance between self and others as the main challenge. A third says the work is to speak for yourself within a relationship and not instead of it. A fourth describes independence and intimacy as different skills rather than opposites. These are descriptions of a theme, and none of them says how any relationship will go.

A different reading of the same axis

Not every astrologer reads it this way. Alice Sparkly Kat, in a 2022 essay, writes that she does not read the 7th house North Node as a call to look to relationships in order to grow. She reads the seventh house as broader than relationships, tied to community, location, endings and the transition at dusk, and she links the 1st house South Node with the family of origin. One essay is a minority view, and it is here to show that the axis has more than one reading.

What the old books leave out

Turning to the books, Alan Leo (1903) never mentions the nodes, and Sepharial (1910) names them only in the context of transits, so neither manual we read assigns the node a meaning in a house. Everything above about the node in this house is therefore modern.

What 21,025 charts show for the 7th

The sample is 21,025 charts, one every 1 day and 61 minutes from 1950 to 2009, computed at 40.71 N with the mean North Node. Placidus puts the node in the 7th house in 8.28% of them (1,741 charts); Whole Sign does so in 8.5%. Twelve equal houses would give 8.33% each.

Change the house system and the node often changes house. Whole Sign keeps 49.6% of the Placidus 7th house nodes in the 7th, sends 47.8% to the 8th and 0% to the 6th. Taking every house at once, the two systems disagree about the node’s house for 53.9% of charts.

For birth time, a birth 15 minutes later moved the node to another Placidus house in 12.5% of the charts with it in the 7th, 30 minutes later in 25% and 60 minutes later in 50.8%; across all houses the figures are 12.5%, 25% and 50.2%. The true node was in a different Placidus house than the mean node in 3.79% of these charts, against 3.26% overall.

The explanation is the daily rotation. In a day the node travels only about 3.18 arcminutes, while the houses rotate once around it, 12th first and 1st last. Above the horizon, the 7th house holds a point for 92 to 148 minutes a day under Placidus at 40.71 N, the figure depending on the point’s sign (taken at 15 degrees of the sign, with the sky turning once in 1,436 minutes). The table gives that window on four days of 2000, with June 21 observed on daylight saving time. Two people born a few hours apart in the same year share the node’s sign and can have it in different houses.

Day Mean North Node that day North Node in the 7th house (New York clock time)

June 21, 2000 25 degrees of Cancer 7:38 pm to 10:02 pm

December 21, 2000 16 degrees of Cancer 6:01 am to 8:28 am

Finding the house your North Node is in

Three inputs decide it: date, exact time and birthplace. A date alone gives the sign through the North Node calculator, but it cannot give the house. The birth chart calculator shows where the node falls, using Placidus by default with Whole Sign as an option, so say which one you mean when you name a house.

Questions to sit with

Nothing here is a task; they are only prompts.

  1. When do you notice that you decided something alone that could have been shared?
  2. What does a fair exchange between two people look like to you, in any kind of partnership?
  3. Which of your own needs are easiest to say out loud, and which are hardest?

Questions people ask

Astrology names the 7th house for partnership, and Sepharial's 1910 list gives it partners and contracts. Some modern guides speak of soulmates near this house, but no house identifies a person, and no placement promises a meeting. Read any soulmate wording as belief, offered for reflection.

In synastry, astrologers lay one chart over another and read where one person's points fall among the other's houses. That is a different question from a North Node in your own 7th house, which is a birth placement. Guides differ on what an overlay means, and none of it is a forecast.

A transit is the node's current position in the sky, passing over a house in your own birth chart. That is a different thing from the node's place at birth, which is what this page covers. Transits are read on their own, and nothing on this page forecasts one.

In the 1st house, the house of the Ascendant. The nodes are exactly opposite, and every chart in our sample agreed under both house systems. Guides describe the 1st house end as the familiar one: independence, self-reliance and going first. The page treats it as description, not a verdict.

For the house, yes. A node that sits in the 7th at one minute can sit in a neighboring house a couple of hours later. In our sample a birth 60 minutes later changed the Placidus house in just over half of these charts. With a date alone you can still find the node's sign.

It is as common as any other house. In our sample of 21,025 charts the mean node was in the 7th in 8.28% of them under Placidus and 8.5% under Whole Sign, close to an even twelfth. No house is rare for the node, and this page ranks none of them.
