A North Node in the 4th house means the Moon’s ascending node was in the fourth house of your birth chart, the house at the bottom of the wheel. Some sources simply say 4th house North Node. The node is a calculated point, not a planet, and the North Node guide covers it; the house is a second layer on top of its sign. Here is what modern astrologers say about the placement and about the South Node in the 10th house opposite it, and what our own charts show about how the house is decided. None of it is established fact: it is belief and tradition, kept for reflection.
Old lists and modern words
Astrologers read the 4th house, an angular house, for home, family and roots; the 4th house page tells the whole story. Sepharial, in 1910, begins his list with “real estate, the residence, the produce of the earth” and continues to the mother and to how things close. Alan Leo, in 1903, puts it more briefly: “Hereditary tendencies; home and domestic life”. Guides today widely describe it as the house of home, and widely place it at the bottom of the chart.
On nodes the two manuals are little help: Sepharial brings them up only for transits, and Leo’s book does not name them. Neither offers a house meaning for the node, so the rest of this page is modern.
North Node in the 4th house: a direction toward home
Popular guides then treat the node’s house as the place where the growth theme is lived out; that is a modern belief, not a classical rule. Guides widely describe the 4th house version as growth toward home and the inner life: family, emotional roots and a sense of belonging that does not depend on an audience. SelfGazer puts it as a call toward emotional life and a genuine home, AstroMatrix as the interior life, and Astro Nectar as a life that feels safe from the inside out.
Cancer is the fourth sign in the natural order, so its vocabulary often bleeds into pages about the 4th house. A North Node in Cancer is a different placement, tied to the year of birth.
Family and ancestry
Pages that dwell on the house turn to family. SelfGazer speaks of ancestry and lineage, Astro Nectar of family patterns named and chosen differently, and Astro-Seek of interest in family, roots and homeland. These are the descriptions guides give. They are not statements about any real family.
The South Node in the 10th house: the public end
Opposite sits the South Node in the 10th house. Guides widely describe that end as career, achievement and the visible self: SelfGazer speaks of fluency in climbing and presenting oneself, Astro Nectar of a pull toward the self others can assess, and Wei Chen Books of public recognition. Some of them frame it through earlier lifetimes, and others read the South Node simply as habit and familiar ground. Past lives are offered as one possibility, never as settled. The 10th house view of the same pair is at North Node in the 10th house.
Private foundation and public role
The pull that pages keep returning to is between the two houses. Astro-Seek sets family against profession, home against public, and Mastering the Zodiac calls the balance challenging. None of them asks for the 10th house end to be dropped: SelfGazer writes that it is no prompt to abandon a career. A few pages also warn against the opposite swing: AstroMatrix against treating depth as a reason to give up ambition, and Mastering the Zodiac against settling too comfortably into familiar ground. They describe it, they do not advise.
What our sample says about the 4th house node
The sample behind these figures is 21,025 charts, one every 1 day and 61 minutes between 1950 and 2009, cast at 40.71 N (the latitude of New York) with the mean North Node. The node was in the 4th house in 8.39% of them under Placidus (1,763 charts) and in 8.44% under Whole Sign, against an even split of 8.33% across twelve houses. That is close to even, so the 4th is an ordinary place for the node to land.
Under Whole Sign the picture shifts. Take the nodes Placidus put in the 4th: 42.7% stayed in the 4th, 46.1% moved to the 5th and 6.4% to the 3rd. For all twelve houses together, the two systems name different houses in 53.9% of charts. In the fictional example chart on this site (June 15, 1990, 2:30 pm, Chicago), the mean node is at 9 degrees 41 minutes of Aquarius: in the 4th house under Placidus and in the 5th under Whole Sign.
The clock matters too. Shift the birth time 15 minutes later and the node left the Placidus 4th house in 12.2% of those charts; 30 minutes later, in 24.7%; 60 minutes later, in 50.1% (all houses: 12.5%, 25% and 50.2%). Using the true node instead of the mean node changed the Placidus house in 3.74% of them (all houses: 3.26%).
| Day | Mean North Node that day | North Node in the 4th house (New York clock time) |
|---|---|---|
| March 20, 2000 | 0 degrees of Leo | 6:40 am to 8:14 am |
| June 21, 2000 | 25 degrees of Cancer | 1:15 am to 2:48 am |
| September 22, 2000 | 21 degrees of Cancer | 6:46 pm to 8:18 pm |
| December 21, 2000 | 16 degrees of Cancer | 11:33 am to 1:04 pm |
The node moves only about 3.18 arcminutes a day while the houses turn past it once every 24 hours, so the year decides the sign and the hour decides the house. Below the horizon, the 4th house keeps a point for between 92 and 148 minutes of each day under Placidus at 40.71 N, the exact figure depending on the point’s sign. Note that June 21 is shown in daylight saving time.
Checking your own chart for the 4th house
Bring a birth date, a birth place and the exact clock time. If the time is missing, the North Node calculator still gives you the sign, but not the house. The birth chart calculator shows the house, with Placidus by default and Whole Sign as an option.
A few questions to leave open
No answer is expected.
- Which rooms or places feel like home to you, and what do they have in common?
- What did you learn about belonging before you had words for it?
- When do you notice yourself reaching for work to avoid a quieter feeling?
Questions people ask
Modern astrologers read it as a direction of growth toward home, family, roots and inner life, with the public and professional side as the familiar ground. It is a belief from popular guides, not a classical rule, and it is offered for reflection. It describes a theme, and it predicts nothing about a person or a household.
In the 10th house, the one opposite. The nodes always sit exactly opposite each other, so their houses do as well. In our 21,025 charts at 40.71 N the pair was 4th and 10th every time the North Node was in the 4th, under Placidus and Whole Sign. Astrologers read the 10th house end as the familiar one.
No. Cancer is the sign the node was in, which follows from your birth year, while the 4th is the house, which follows from your birth time and place. Guides often describe the two in similar words because Cancer is the fourth sign in the natural order, yet a chart can have either without the other.
Yes, because the house depends on the hour. Among our charts with the node in the Placidus 4th house, a birth time 15 minutes later put it in another house in 12.2%, and 60 minutes later in 50.1%. Without a time you still get the node's sign, but the house stays unknown.
Astrologers do not say so. Pages that write about it speak of balance between private and public life, and one says plainly that it is no prompt to abandon a career. They describe a theme to reflect on, not a rule about how anyone should arrange work and home.
