Your North Node: How to Find It and What It Means

What the North Node is, mean node versus true node, a lookup table of North Node signs from 1930 to 2030, and what astrologers read into it, sign by sign.

Last updated September 30, 2026

Your North Node is not a planet, a star or anything you could see through a telescope. It is a point in space: the place where the Moon’s path around the Earth crossed the Sun’s apparent path, heading north, at the moment you were born. Astronomers use it to predict eclipses. Astrologers have used it for centuries as a sensitive point in the chart, and modern astrologers read it as a direction of growth. This guide keeps the two apart. First the astronomy, then the two ways the node is calculated, then a table where you can look up your North Node sign from your birth date alone, and finally what astrologers say about it, sign by sign and house by house. It is all offered as tradition and entertainment, for reflection, never as a forecast.

What the North Node Is

The Moon’s orbit is tilted slightly against the ecliptic, the path the Sun appears to trace through the zodiac over a year. Two tilted circles cross at two points, and those two crossings are the lunar nodes.

Where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s

Wikipedia’s entry on the lunar node puts it simply: “The ascending or north node is where the Moon moves into the northern ecliptic hemisphere”. The descending, or south, node is where it drops back below. Because the two nodes are the ends of one line through the Earth, they always sit exactly opposite each other. Dane Rudhyar, the 20th-century astrologer, made the same point in his essay on the nodes: “These two points, being the ends of a line, must obviously be in opposition to each other”. So if your North Node is at 9 degrees of Aquarius, your South Node is at 9 degrees of Leo.

A cycle of about 18.6 years, moving backward

The nodes do not stay put. The Moon’s orbit slowly turns, and the nodes drift backward through the zodiac, against the order of the signs. The same Wikipedia entry gives the full circle as a nodal period of “18.612958 years”. That works out to about a year and a half in each sign, which is why the North Node is a generational placement: everyone born within the same eighteen months or so shares its sign.

Why eclipses happen near the nodes

The nodes matter to astronomers because eclipses can only happen when a New Moon or Full Moon falls close to one of them. Only then are the Sun, Moon and Earth lined up in three dimensions rather than just on the flat map of the zodiac. That link to eclipses is also where the node’s oldest names come from, as the next sections show.

Mean Node or True Node

There are two standard ways to calculate where the node is, and they can disagree by a degree or two.

The mean node

The mean node smooths out the small monthly wobble in the Moon’s orbit and moves steadily backward. Rudhyar pointed out that the node printed in an ordinary ephemeris “actually is a "mean position"”, an average rather than the momentary crossing. Starvela’s birth chart and readings use the mean node, which keeps your results consistent across the site.

The true node

The true node follows the Moon’s actual orbit at that moment. The Swiss Ephemeris documentation, used by many astrology programs, describes it this way: “The ‘true’ lunar node is usually considered the osculating node element of the momentary lunar orbit.” Because it wobbles around the mean node, it occasionally moves forward for short spells, and near a sign boundary it can change sign a few days earlier or later than the mean node.

Which one to use

Astrologers disagree, and neither camp is wrong: they are two definitions of the same idea. Our North Node calculator leads with the mean node and always shows the true node beside it, and it tells you when the two fall in different signs for your date. Hindu astrology names the nodes differently again, Rahu and Ketu, and usually works in the sidereal zodiac, so its sign for Rahu can be one sign earlier than the tropical sign we give.

Find Your North Node by Birth Date

You do not need a birth time to find your North Node sign. The node moves only about three arcminutes a day, so the date is almost always enough.

The table: 1930 to 2030

We computed the sign of the mean North Node for every day from January 1, 1930 to December 31, 2030 with the same engine the calculator uses (tropical zodiac, one reading per day at noon UTC). The result is 66 stretches, each about 1.55 years long. Find the row that contains your birth date. Your South Node is always the opposite sign, shown in the last column. The first and last rows are cut at the edges of the table, not at a change of sign.

Read the order of the signs down the table: Aries, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn. That is the zodiac running backward, the node’s retrograde drift made visible.

If you were born near a change

The dates in the table are for the mean node. The true node can sit a degree or so away from it, so it can cross into the next sign a few days before or after the date shown. If your birthday is within a week or so of a boundary, run your date through the calculator below, which checks both definitions for your birth moment and place.

What Astrologers Say About the North Node

This is where the astronomy stops and the tradition begins. Everything in this section is what astrologers describe, offered as a symbolic language, not as something the node does to anyone.

The Dragon’s Head and the Dragon’s Tail

The oldest names are visual. Western astrology called the North Node the Dragon’s Head and the South Node the Dragon’s Tail; Wikipedia notes that “The ascending node is referred to as the dragon’s head” and records the Hindu names Rahu and Ketu for the same pair. The Moon’s path loops above and below the Sun’s like a winding body, and the names keep that picture: a head where it rises north, a tail where it sinks south.

A direction of growth

The modern reading is psychological rather than predictive. Rudhyar described the node in these terms: “the North Lunar Node represents the point of intake of spiritual cosmic energies”. Popular guides written since then describe it in a similar way. Yoga Journal says it “represents the direction we are heading”; the astrology site hniizato.com puts it as “The North Node points to the direction of growth.” Three independent pages, one shared idea, and that is how we present it: a belief widely repeated among astrologers, not a finding. Some guides go further and use the word destiny. We leave that word to them.

The South Node: familiar ground

The South Node is read as the other end of the same axis: what comes easily, out of habit or long practice. Here the guides split. Saturn and Honey summarizes a common modern view: “we start off in the south node and move toward the north node”. Some astrologers, often under the name karmic astrology, go further and link the South Node with past lives, and Astrostyle describes the nodes as showing “what you were in past lifetimes (South Node)”. Others read the same point simply as habits and comfort zones, with no past lives involved. We present both as views held by some astrologers and do not take a side.

Where it sits in a birth chart

Starvela’s birth chart draws the North Node as one of its eleven points, with the South Node implied opposite. In a reading, the node is usually interpreted alongside the planets it touches rather than on its own.

Your North Node by House

With a birth time, the node also falls in a house, and astrologers read the house as the area of life where the growth theme plays out. In our fictional example chart (June 15, 1990, 2:30 pm, Chicago), the mean North Node sits at 9 degrees 41 minutes of Aquarius, which is the 4th house under Placidus and the 5th under Whole Sign, so the house system matters here. Our guide to the twelve houses explains what each house covers and why the systems disagree.

The house is far more sensitive to the clock than the sign is. The node takes about a year and a half to cross a sign, while the houses turn past it once a day. In our sample of 21,025 charts (1950 to 2009, latitude 40.71 N, Placidus), a birth time 30 minutes later put the node in a different house in 25% of them, and the node changed house between Placidus and Whole Sign in 53.9%. Each house has its own page, which reads the node there with the South Node in the house opposite:

On a chart wheel the node is marked with its own glyph, a horseshoe open at the bottom. Our page on the North Node symbol shows both node glyphs, with their names and how to type them.

The North Node in the 12 Signs

Each sign below is a short sketch, with the most recent stretches from the table and a link to the longer page for that sign. The sign character comes from Alan Leo’s Astrology for All (1899); the node reading, growth toward one sign and away from the familiar habits of the opposite one, is the modern interpretation described above, not a classical rule.

North Node in Aries (South Node in Libra)

Born 1986 to 1987, 2004 to 2006 or 2023 to 2025, for example. Leo saw Aries types as “leaders in ideals and pioneers of advanced thought”. Modern node readings describe a pull toward that self-starting quality and away from Libra’s habit of weighing everyone else first. The longer page is North Node in Aries.

North Node in Taurus (South Node in Scorpio)

Born 1984 to 1986, 2003 to 2004 or 2021 to 2023, for example. Leo called Taureans “patient, enduring, persistent”. Astrologers describe this node as growth toward steadiness and simple comfort, stepping back from Scorpio’s intensity and all-or-nothing depth. More in North Node in Taurus.

North Node in Gemini (South Node in Sagittarius)

Born 1983 to 1984, 2001 to 2003 or 2020 to 2021, for example. Leo found Gemini natives “remarkable for their versatility”. The modern reading points toward curiosity, questions and conversation, and away from the Sagittarian comfort of already having the big answer. See North Node in Gemini for the dates and the detail.

North Node in Cancer (South Node in Capricorn)

Born 1981 to 1983, 2000 to 2001 or 2018 to 2020, for example. Leo called Cancer “one of the most sensitive signs of the zodiac”. Astrologers describe this node as growth toward feeling, home and care, and away from Capricorn’s reliance on status and control. The full page is North Node in Cancer.

North Node in Leo (South Node in Aquarius)

Born 1980 to 1981, 1998 to 2000 or 2017 to 2018, for example. Leo described the sign as “genuinely kind, warm-hearted and loving”. The modern reading points toward personal expression and warmth, and away from the Aquarian habit of standing back inside the group. North Node in Leo goes further.

North Node in Virgo (South Node in Pisces)

Born 1978 to 1980, 1997 to 1998 or 2015 to 2017, for example. Leo called Virgo natives critical, adding that “they usually turn this criticism also upon themselves”. Astrologers describe this node as growth toward practical care and useful routine, away from Piscean drift. Read on in North Node in Virgo.

North Node in Libra (South Node in Aries)

Born 1976 to 1978, 1995 to 1997 or 2014 to 2015, for example. Leo tied Libra to “justice, equilibrium, balance”. The modern reading points toward partnership, fairness and cooperation, and away from the Aries reflex of going it alone. The page on the North Node in Libra has every stay since 1930.

North Node in Scorpio (South Node in Taurus)

Born 1975 to 1976, 1994 to 1995 or 2012 to 2014, for example. Leo saw in Scorpio “more scope for extremes of character” than in any other sign. Astrologers describe this node as growth toward depth and change, and away from Taurus’s attachment to what is safe and known. More in North Node in Scorpio.

North Node in Sagittarius (South Node in Gemini)

Born 1973 to 1975, 1992 to 1994 or 2011 to 2012, for example. Leo wrote that Sagittarians “always aim for the highest”. The modern reading points toward meaning, belief and the wider view, and away from Gemini’s endless gathering of facts. North Node in Sagittarius is the longer read.

North Node in Capricorn (South Node in Cancer)

Born 1972 to 1973, 1990 to 1992 or 2009 to 2011, for example. Leo called Capricorn natives “impartial, just and accurate”. Astrologers describe this node as growth toward responsibility and long projects of one’s own, stepping out from Cancer’s shelter of home and family roles. See North Node in Capricorn.

North Node in Aquarius (South Node in Leo)

Born 1970 to 1972, 1989 to 1990 or 2008 to 2009, and again from August 2026, for example. Leo described Aquarians as “determined, patient, quiet, unobtrusive and faithful”. The modern reading points toward community and shared ideals, and away from Leo’s need for the spotlight. The detail is in North Node in Aquarius.

North Node in Pisces (South Node in Virgo)

Born 1987 to 1989, 2006 to 2008 or 2025 to 2026, for example. Leo wrote that Pisceans, “Possessing very strong emotions”, grow much attached to their friends. Astrologers describe this node as growth toward compassion and imagination, loosening Virgo’s grip on getting every detail right. North Node in Pisces covers it at length.

The Node Among Astrology’s Long Cycles

The nodal cycle of about 18.6 years is one of the slow rhythms astrologers watch. The node comes back to its birth position around ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74, which astrologers call nodal returns, and it sits exactly opposite its birth position about halfway between. Saturn keeps a slower beat of roughly 29.5 years; our guide to the Saturn return sets out that cycle with the ages we measured. Neither cycle schedules events. They are markers astrologers use to frame a stretch of life for reflection.

To see your own node with its degree, your South Node and whether the mean and true node agree for your birth date, use the calculator above. If you would like the node read together with the rest of your chart, a personal reading places it in its chapter on growth and structure, as a written reflection rather than a prediction.

Questions people ask

It is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path heading north, at the moment you were born. It is not a planet. Modern astrologers read its sign and house as a direction of growth and the South Node, opposite it, as familiar ground. It is a tradition offered for reflection, not a fixed destiny.

Your North Node is the sign the Moon's ascending node occupied on your birth date. Find your date in the table on this page: each sign lasts about a year and a half. If you were born within a few days of a change, use the calculator, which checks both the mean and the true node.

Yes. Hindu astrology calls the North Node Rahu and the South Node Ketu, and Western astrology has long called them the Dragon's Head and the Dragon's Tail. Vedic charts usually use the sidereal zodiac, so the sign given for Rahu there is often one sign earlier than the tropical sign shown here.

They are the two ends of one line, so they always sit exactly opposite each other, at the same degree of opposite signs. In the modern reading, the North Node marks the qualities to grow toward and the South Node the habits and strengths that already come easily. One is never read as good and the other bad.
