North Node in the 1st House and South Node in the 7th

What astrologers say a North Node in the 1st house means, how they read the South Node in the 7th, and why the house depends on your birth time.

Last updated September 30, 2026

A North Node in the 1st house means the Moon’s ascending node sat in the first house of your chart at birth, the house that begins at the Ascendant. Guides also write it as the 1st house North Node. The node itself is a calculated point and not a planet; the North Node guide covers that ground. Below, we collect how modern astrologers describe the placement and the South Node across from it, then test the house against our own sample of charts. Everything said about meaning is tradition and belief.

What the North Node in the 1st house is read to mean

Sepharial, in 1910, wrote that the first house “governs the personal appearance”. Alan Leo, in 1903, listed personality and outlook among its matters. Guides today widely describe it as the house of the self, and they agree that it starts at the Ascendant, which is why it needs a birth time. For the house by itself, see the 1st house page.

In the modern reading the North Node stands for a direction of growth, and the house holding it is taken as the stretch of life where that direction is worked out. On the 1st house the guides we read sit close together. Many describe growth toward self-definition: trusting your own preferences and timing, and letting yourself be seen as a separate person. One calls it a “shift from relational merger into individual assertion”. Another stresses that the change is not toward selfishness, only toward being visible.

Two layers: house and sign

The house is one layer and the sign is another. The sign depends on your birth year and changes about every 18.6 months; the house depends on the hour. Some guides pair the 1st house with Aries, the first sign in the natural order, and one lists Aries beside the placement. That is a different placement, read from the sign and not the house, and North Node in Aries covers it.

The South Node in the 7th house, seen from the 1st

Because the nodes are exactly opposite, a North Node in the 1st house always arrives with the South Node in the 7th house. Whoever wants the pair told starting from the partnership end can open North Node in the 7th house.

Guides widely describe the 7th house end as familiar ground. The words they use are partnership, adjusting to others, and reading what someone needs before noticing your own wish. They present it as a real skill, and the concern they raise is narrower: that adapting can turn into the only way of knowing what you want. One page warns against over-adaptability, and another speaks of a habit of seeking permission. None of this grades either end of the line.

A few pages phrase this in past-life terms and say the earlier pattern was partnership; others read the same point as early habit with no lifetimes involved. Past lives are one lens here, and we do not claim them.

A different reading of the same axis

Alice Sparkly Kat, in a 2022 essay on the first and seventh houses, reads this axis through family and belonging, and notes that her reading differs from the common one about codependency. For the North Node in the 1st house she describes a yearning for family and an unsettling of the family of origin. It is one astrologer’s account, and we report it beside the majority view without ranking either.

Self and other: the pull the pages describe

Guides describe a pull between developing the self and keeping harmony with others. One page calls it a tension between giving and receiving. Another says that cooperation and mutual respect are what keep the balance. A third says you are not abandoning relationship, only outgrowing the idea that relationship is the main source of identity. The description is of a balance sought, and it does not tell anyone what to do.

A few pages also tie the placement to self-image and self-presentation, including the physical body. They speak of how you come across, not of features.

Several guides associate the placement with roles that reward initiative, visibility and a recognizable voice, and name entrepreneurship, creative work or leadership. These are associations from popular pages. They are not suggestions about anyone’s work.

Where the old books stop

In the two older manuals we read, the node carries no house meaning at all. Leo’s 1903 book contains no passage on the Moon’s nodes, and Sepharial’s 1910 manual brings them up only when discussing transits. The reading above is therefore modern, drawn from recent web guides, and we cannot speak for older texts we did not read.

How often the node lands in the 1st house

We placed the mean North Node in 21,025 charts, one every 1 day and 61 minutes from 1950 to 2009, at 40.71 N, the latitude of New York. It fell in the 1st house in 8.37% of them under Placidus (1,759 charts) and in 8.18% under Whole Sign. An even split over twelve houses is 8.33%, so the 1st house is neither favored nor rare for the node.

The house system matters. Take the Placidus 1st house charts and recast them under Whole Sign: 47.2% stayed in the 1st, 49.7% moved to the 2nd and none went to the 12th. Over all twelve houses, the two systems gave different houses for the node in 53.9% of charts. Mean and true node are two ways to place the same point; in 3.01% of these charts the true node was in a different Placidus house than the mean node, against 3.26% across all houses.

The birth-time figures are the honest reason the house needs a reliable time. For the Placidus 1st house charts, shifting the birth time 15 minutes later put the node in another house in 12.4%, 30 minutes later in 24.8%, and 60 minutes later in 49.7%.

Day Mean North Node that day North Node in the 1st house (New York clock time)
March 20, 2000 0 degrees of Leo 11:26 am to 1:01 pm
June 21, 2000 25 degrees of Cancer 5:57 am to 7:30 am
September 22, 2000 21 degrees of Cancer 11:24 pm to 1:00 am (across midnight)
December 21, 2000 16 degrees of Cancer 4:08 pm to 5:39 pm

The node crawls about 3.18 arcminutes a day, so the houses turn past it once every day. Under Placidus at 40.71 N a point spends 92 to 148 minutes a day in the 1st house, depending on its sign, so the window in the table is short and the hour of birth decides the house while the year decides the sign. The June clock times are daylight saving times.

How to find your North Node’s house

You need the birth date, the exact birth time and the birthplace. Without a time you can still get the sign from the North Node calculator, but not the house. Say which house system you mean each time a house comes up. Our birth chart calculator starts with Placidus and lets you choose Whole Sign.

Three questions to hold lightly

Take these as prompts for a quiet evening.

  1. Where do you check what others want before you check what you want?
  2. What would it look like to introduce yourself plainly, without softening it first?
  3. What do you bring to a partnership that does not depend on being needed?

Questions people ask

It means the Moon's ascending node was in the first house of your chart at birth, a fact that depends on your birth time. Modern guides read it as growth toward self-definition and visibility, with familiar partnership habits at the South Node end. It is a belief offered for reflection, and it predicts nothing.

The house and the sign are two layers, and astrologers read both. The house says where the growth theme plays out, while Leo describes its style, and each has its own page here. Neither outranks the other. The sign follows your birth year and the house follows your birth time.

A few pages link the 1st house with appearance and self-presentation, and Sepharial named the house for personal appearance in 1910. The node describes no one's looks. The guides speak of how you present yourself and come across, not of features, so treat it as a loose association and nothing more.

Synastry compares two charts, and a partner's node falling in your 1st house is one such overlay. That is a different question from your own birth placement, which this page covers. Astrologers describe it as a contact between two charts, not as a forecast. The synastry pages explain the method.

Yes for the house, no for the sign. In our sample a birth time 15 minutes later moved the node into another Placidus house in 12.4% of charts that had it in the 1st, and an hour later in 49.7%. The sign needs only the birth date, and the calculator gives it.

In the 7th house. The two nodes sit exactly opposite each other, so the houses are opposite too. We checked 21,025 charts under Placidus and Whole Sign and found no exception. Guides read the 7th house end as familiar ground in partnership, a description and not a grade.
