The 6th house is the sixth segment of a birth chart, and astrologers read it for the rhythm of ordinary days: work, routines, skills and service. Read on for the guide consensus, the house’s spot on the wheel, the early lists and the care we take with their wording, plus our own count of empty 6th houses. This is tradition, offered as entertainment and food for thought.
The 6th house in current guides
Daily work and craft
Guides widely describe the 6th house as the house of work and routine. Astrology Zone says daily routines and the tasks that come across your desk are covered by this sector. Astrology.com says work and service are central to it. Astrostyle says it is known for analytical thinking and strategizing, and Numerologist.com describes it as unglamorous repetition: showing up, refining, adjusting, and doing the work again tomorrow.
Service to others
A second theme is service. Astrology Zone says the house is strongly related to service to others in a giving way, and Astrology.com speaks of those who serve us, those we serve and those who depend on us. Wikipedia’s summary of Greene says the house is where personal needs are balanced with responsibility. So when guides say service here, they mean everyday duties and the people around them.
Wellness habits, described and not advised
Several guides also connect the house with health habits. Astrology.com titles it the House of Health, Astrology Zone limits that to the steady, preventative habits of a regular routine, and Wikipedia’s summary of Greene speaks of integrating work and health into one routine. We repeat that as a description of what the house is read for. A birth chart is not a source of health guidance, and nothing on this page is.
Its opposite number: the 12th house
Across the wheel is the 12th. Astrology Zone says the 12th governs the subconscious mind, while the 6th governs the conscious mind. Numerologist.com says the two form one of the most psychologically rich polarities in the zodiac, with the 6th as craft and the 12th as flow. The 12th house page picks up from there.
What a planet in the 6th house is said to do
Numerologist.com says planets in the 6th show up in daily rhythms: the work, the habits and the care that hold a life together. That is one guide’s reading, held here as a belief, and this page gives no verdict on any planet.
Where the 6th house sits, and the Latin name it carried
Second among the cadent houses, it comes right after the succedent 5th and, by number, matches Virgo. That matching is what Alan Leo pointed to in 1903 with his advice to “pay special attention to the corresponding house”. The houses guide has the group and system details.
Wikipedia’s list of houses gives its old Latin name as Valetudo, glossed as Health, and summarizes the house in terms of health, daily routines and service to others. It records how modern authors frame it: Greene as balance between personal needs and responsibility, and Rudhyar as self-improvement through discipline and attention to detail.
The early lists, and the care we take with them
Sepharial’s 1910 book Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope lists “servants, and personal comforts” among the sixth house’s concerns, with clothes, food and other everyday requirements, and with health and hygiene. Alan Leo, in How to Judge a Nativity (1903), describes the house as “Service and attachments arising from the expression of the tenth house”, and his longer list is heavier than this. We do not quote or repeat that heavier part.
What remains is a picture modern astrologers keep: the household and everyday upkeep, the people who serve and are served, the habits that hold a life together. We read that as description only, and we do not use the house to say anything about anyone’s health.
Empty or busy: the 6th house in our sample
For this count we generated 21,025 charts at 40.71 N, placed 1 day and 61 minutes apart across 1950 to 2009, with ten bodies: the Sun, the Moon and Mercury through Pluto. Under Placidus 48.1% left the 6th house bare, and under Whole Sign 46.9%. A crowd of three or more appeared in 8.3% of Placidus charts. The typical chart has 5.68 empty houses out of 12, so a bare 6th is simply common.
Placidus widths of the 6th house
Whole Sign makes the house 30 degrees, always. Placidus varies it by latitude and turns it into a twin of the 12th, which has the same width at every moment. Here are its widths over a whole turn of the sky, in degrees:
| Latitude | Narrowest | Average | Widest |
|---|---|---|---|
| The equator | 27.6 | 30.0 | 32.6 |
| Miami (25.8 N) | 23.2 | 30.0 | 39.8 |
| Los Angeles (34.05 N) | 21.3 | 30.0 | 43.7 |
| New York (40.71 N) | 19.5 | 30.0 | 48.1 |
| London (51.5 N) | 15.7 | 30.0 | 60.5 |
| 60 N (Oslo, Helsinki) | 10.9 | 30.0 | 84.9 |
The 6th is one of the houses that swings furthest at high latitude: at 60 N it runs from 10.9 to 84.9 degrees, while in Miami it stays between 23.2 and 39.8.
Dusk: the Sun in the 6th house
The Sun enters this house around sunset. New York clock time, Placidus, for four days of 2000:
| Day | Sun in the 6th house (New York clock time) |
|---|---|
| March 20, 2000 (equinox) | 6:05 pm to 8:03 pm |
| June 21, 2000 (solstice) | 8:26 pm to 9:56 pm |
| September 22, 2000 (equinox) | 6:49 pm to 8:48 pm |
| December 21, 2000 (solstice) | 4:27 pm to 6:56 pm |
The clock rule: after sunset, Placidus gives houses 6, 5 and 4 a third each of the road to local midnight, and the 6th leads. June is on daylight saving time, and four dates in one city are an illustration, not a schedule for everywhere.
A different system, a different house
Of planets in the Placidus 6th, 51.2% stayed in the 6th under Whole Sign, 45.9% crossed into the 7th and 2.9% into the 5th. In 8.6% of charts the Sun was in the Placidus 6th, a touch above the even-split 8.33%.
Reading the 6th house off your chart
A birth chart calculator needs your date, place and exact time. The 6th house begins after the 5th house and ends at the Descendant. If it is bare, read the sign on its edge and the position of that sign’s ruler.
After it comes the 7th house. To fit it into a full chart reading, try how to read a birth chart.
Three prompts for the 6th house
Nothing here is a verdict.
- Which parts of an ordinary day do you do almost without thinking, and which take real attention?
- What skill have you built slowly, by repeating it, and what did it teach you?
- Who do you serve or look after, and who looks after you?
Questions people ask
Astrologers read the 6th house for daily work and routine: tasks, habits, skills built by repetition and service to others. It is a cadent house and, in the natural order of the wheel, echoes Virgo, the sixth sign. It describes themes for reflection and says nothing about how any workday will go.
Older lists and some modern guides attach everyday wellness habits to the 6th house, while others keep it to work, routine and craft. We describe it as a house of daily routine, and a birth chart is not a place to look for health guidance. For that, ask a qualified professional.
Nothing is missing. In our sample of 21,025 charts at 40.71 N, 48.1% had no planet in the 6th house under Placidus and 46.9% under Whole Sign. Astrologers read an empty house through the sign on its edge and the planet that rules that sign, wherever that planet sits.
By the natural order the 6th house echoes Virgo, and Astrology.com names Mercury as its ruling planet. Sepharial, in 1910, wrote that Mercury governs Gemini and Virgo. For your own chart, the ruler that matters is the planet of the sign on the 6th house edge, which can be any planet.
For many planets. Of the planets we found in the Placidus 6th house, 51.2% were also in the 6th under Whole Sign and 45.9% had moved to the 7th (21,025 charts, 40.71 N). A planet well away from a house edge stays put. Compare both systems in a chart calculator.
Astrologers also read the lunar nodes by house. See the North Node in the 6th house, with the South Node in the house opposite.
