The 3rd house is the third segment of a birth chart, and astrologers read it for the everyday: how a person speaks, learns, gets around locally and deals with siblings and neighbors. What follows: where the house sits, the two early lists, today’s guides and our own count of how often it is empty. Treat it all as tradition and good conversation, not as a prediction.
The 3rd house at a glance
Cadent and first of its group, the house echoes Gemini, the third sign. Alan Leo’s 1903 advice to “pay special attention to the corresponding house” rests on that numbering. It comes after the 2nd and leads toward the 4th; the cadent group and the systems are in the houses guide.
Wikipedia’s list of houses gives its old Latin name as Fratres, glossed as Brothers, and summarizes it as communication, learning and relationships with the immediate surroundings. It records two modern framings: Houlding on its traditional role in local travel, siblings and the sharing of ideas, and Rudhyar on the emergence of the thinking mind, curiosity and the wish to connect through knowledge.
Letters, kin and schooling in the early lists
Sepharial’s 1910 book Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope says the third house governs “short journeys, letters, and other means of communication”, and adds relations and neighbors. Alan Leo, in How to Judge a Nativity (1903), lists “Relatives and kindred, travelling, intellect derived from education and study”. The two lists agree closely: near kin, nearby travel, messages and schooling. It is one of the houses where the old and modern readings differ least, because letters and short trips are still what most people do daily.
Talk, thought and short trips: current guides
Communication and the mind
Guides widely describe the 3rd house as the house of communication. Astrology.com calls it the House of Communication and adds intelligence and early education. Astrology Zone lists writing, speaking, editing, research and translation, and includes thinking and gathering facts. Astrostyle says language lives here. Numerologist.com reads the house as the whole way the mind organizes what is in front of it, and says that describing it as communication and short trips gives you the furniture without the room.
Nearby people, places and trips
A second theme is the immediate surroundings, and it appears on all four pages. Astrology Zone lists the neighborhood, short-distance trips and transportation, and siblings and cousins. Astrology.com mentions brothers, sisters and neighbors and short trips. Astrostyle names siblings, neighbors and coworkers. Numerologist.com calls the mind of this house local, concrete and immediate. The theme is closeness in every sense: what is near enough to notice and talk about.
The far end of the axis: the 9th house
Numerologist.com says the third and ninth houses form one of astrology’s most important axes, with the 9th looking for the pattern behind the facts the 3rd collects. The 9th house page reads the far end.
Mercury and Gemini
Two guides name Mercury as the house’s ruling planet, with Gemini. Astrology Zone calls it the intellectual, communicative planet.
How a planet in the 3rd house is read
Traditionally, astrologers read planets in the cadent houses, this one among them, as the least prominent in a chart, and the angular houses as the most. That is a convention about emphasis and not a ranking of anyone’s chart, and we give no verdict on any planet.
The 3rd house in 21,025 charts
The charts were computed for 40.71 N at intervals of 1 day and 61 minutes, 1950 to 2009, with the Sun, the Moon and Mercury to Pluto. Empty 3rd houses turned up in 45.8% under Placidus and 44.3% under Whole Sign, while 7.3% of Placidus charts held three or more bodies there. Given 5.68 empty houses per chart, a blank 3rd is well within the ordinary.
How the 3rd house’s width varies
Whole Sign: 30 degrees, no exceptions. Placidus: a width that depends on latitude and that always equals the 9th. For a whole rotation of the sky, the figures are:
| Latitude | Narrowest | Average | Widest |
|---|---|---|---|
| The equator | 27.6 | 30.0 | 32.6 |
| Miami (25.8 N) | 24.0 | 30.0 | 34.4 |
| Los Angeles (34.05 N) | 22.4 | 30.0 | 35.5 |
| New York (40.71 N) | 20.9 | 30.0 | 36.7 |
| London (51.5 N) | 17.5 | 30.0 | 39.8 |
| 60 N (Oslo, Helsinki) | 12.7 | 30.0 | 44.6 |
This is one of the steadier houses: even at 60 N it never passes 44.6 degrees, and in New York it stays between 20.9 and 36.7.
Past midnight: the Sun in the 3rd house
This is the first house the Sun enters after midnight. Below, Placidus timing in New York clock time for four days of 2000:
| Day | Sun in the 3rd house (New York clock time) |
|---|---|
| March 20, 2000 (equinox) | 12:04 am to 2:03 am |
| June 21, 2000 (solstice) | 12:58 am to 2:28 am |
| September 22, 2000 (equinox) | 12:49 am to 2:48 am |
| December 21, 2000 (solstice) | 11:55 pm to 2:23 am |
The pattern: from midnight to sunrise Placidus runs through houses 3, 2 and 1, one third each, and the 3rd opens the run. June is on daylight saving time, and December starts a few minutes before midnight on the clock. All four dates belong to one city.
If you switch to Whole Sign
Of the planets in the Placidus 3rd, 49% stayed in the 3rd under Whole Sign, 41.3% shifted to the 4th and 5.1% to the 2nd. The Sun was in the Placidus 3rd in 8.31% of charts, almost exactly the even-split 8.33%.
Where to see the 3rd house on your chart
Your date, place and exact time go into a birth chart calculator, and the 3rd house is the segment following the 2nd house. For a vacant house, follow the edge sign to its ruler and see where that planet is.
The 4th house is next. If you want the bigger picture, how to read a birth chart sets the order of steps.
Everyday questions about the 3rd house
Treat these as conversation starters.
- How do you learn something new: by reading, listening, trying it, or asking someone?
- Who are the people you talk to most in a week, and what do you talk about?
- What is the shortest trip you make regularly, and what do you notice on it?
Questions people ask
Astrologers read the 3rd house for everyday communication and learning: speaking, writing, early schooling, siblings, neighbors and short trips. It is a cadent house and, in the natural order of the wheel, echoes Gemini, the third sign. It describes a theme for reflection and makes no prediction about a person.
They sit opposite each other and are usually read as a pair. Guides describe the 3rd as the near and the concrete: local surroundings, short trips, gathering facts. The 9th is described as the far and the abstract: long journeys, belief and the search for a bigger picture.
Nothing is missing. In our sample of 21,025 charts at 40.71 N, 45.8% had no planet in the 3rd house under Placidus and 44.3% under Whole Sign. Astrologers read an empty house through the sign on its edge and the planet that rules that sign, wherever that planet sits.
The natural order pairs the 3rd house with Gemini, and guides widely name Mercury, the planet associated with communication, as its ruler. In your own chart, the planet that matters for this house is the ruler of the sign on its edge, which can be any sign and so any planet.
For some planets. Of the planets we found in the Placidus 3rd house, 49% were also in the 3rd under Whole Sign and 41.3% had moved to the 4th (21,025 charts, 40.71 N). A planet well away from a house edge stays put. Compare both systems in a chart calculator.
Astrologers also read the lunar nodes by house. See the North Node in the 3rd house, with the South Node in the house opposite.
