2nd House in Astrology: Resources, Values and Worth

The 2nd house in astrology: what Sepharial and Alan Leo listed, how guides read resources and values, and our own figures on empty 2nd houses.

Last updated September 30, 2026

The 2nd house is the second segment of a birth chart, and astrologers read it for what a person has and values: income, possessions, resources and, in many guides, a sense of worth. Ahead: its place on the wheel, two early lists, the points on which modern guides agree or split, and how often it sits empty in our own sample. This is tradition for reflection, and never advice about money.

Is the 2nd house just the money house?

Guides widely describe the 2nd house as the house of personal resources. Astrology Zone says earned income is its main element, Astrology.com calls it the House of Possessions, and Astrostyle says earned income and money management begin here on the most basic level. Numerologist.com agrees that money is one expression of the house, and adds that calling it the money house is the shallowest version of what it represents.

There is a real split on what else belongs. Numerologist.com puts a question at the center: what am I worth? Wikipedia’s summary of Greene points the same way, at an inner value system that shapes emotional security as much as finances. Astrology Zone goes the other way. Its author writes that in their experience the house has nothing to do with confidence, estimated value or belief in oneself, and that those belong to the first house. Both are beliefs and both can be read as useful, so we set them side by side and do not choose.

The senses and the felt sense of having something

A few pages add a bodily note. Astrostyle links the house to the senses and to comfort, and Numerologist.com says the felt sense of having substance lives in the body before it shows up in a bank account. That is a small reading, but it explains why guides so often describe the house through comfort and steadiness rather than through figures.

The 2nd house on the wheel

Leading the succedent group, it follows the 1st house and echoes Taurus, the second sign. The matching of house to sign by number is what Alan Leo meant in 1903 by “pay special attention to the corresponding house”. For the groups and the systems, the houses guide has the detail.

Wikipedia’s list of houses gives the old Latin name as Lucrum, glossed as Gain, and summarizes the house as personal resources, material possessions and self-worth. It also records how two modern authors frame it: Greene as an internalized value system, and Rudhyar as the process of building personal foundations in relation to the material world.

Finance and movable effects: the early lists

Sepharial, in his 1910 book Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope, says the second house rules “finance, movable effects, commerce”. Alan Leo, in How to Judge a Nativity (1903), gives it “Finance, monetary prospects”. Both name resources as the classical topic of the house, in the way a topic is named in an index, and neither reading is a promise or a forecast about any person’s money.

How guides read the 2nd house in a chart

One guide on a planet here

Numerologist.com says a planet here shapes what a person values, what they build and how security works for them. That is one guide’s reading of a placement, and we hold it as a belief without ranking any planet.

Personal against shared: the 8th house

Two pages tie the pair together. Astrology Zone says shared money belongs to the 8th, found opposite the 2nd on the wheel, and keeps the 2nd for personal money. Astrostyle calls the 2nd and 8th the two money houses. The 8th house page reads the other side.

Venus and Taurus

Two guides name Venus as the natural ruler of the house, with Taurus. Sepharial wrote in 1910 that Venus governs Taurus and Libra. For any one chart, the ruler that matters is the planet of the sign on the 2nd house edge.

Our count of empty 2nd houses

Here is what 21,025 computed charts show, taken at 40.71 N, 1 day and 61 minutes apart from 1950 to 2009, with the Sun, the Moon and Mercury to Pluto. The 2nd house was empty in 46.3% under Placidus and 44.3% under Whole Sign; 7.7% of Placidus charts put three or more bodies in it. The average is 5.68 empty houses per chart. Astrology Zone calls an empty house normal and nothing to be concerned about, and says to look to the ruler of the sign on its edge.

Width of the 2nd house, latitude by latitude

Under Whole Sign it is exactly 30 degrees. Under Placidus it moves with latitude and always matches the 8th. Degrees of the zodiac, across one whole turn:

Latitude Narrowest Average Widest
The equator 27.6 30.0 32.6
Miami (25.8 N) 23.7 30.0 36.9
Los Angeles (34.05 N) 22.0 30.0 39.1
New York (40.71 N) 20.4 30.0 41.5
London (51.5 N) 16.8 30.0 47.7
60 N (Oslo, Helsinki) 11.9 30.0 57.8

The spread is modest near the equator and grows toward the pole: the 2nd house runs from 16.8 to 47.7 degrees in London and from 11.9 to 57.8 at 60 N, always averaging 30.

The small hours: the Sun in the 2nd house

Deep in the night the Sun is here. Times below are New York clock time, Placidus, for four days of 2000:

Day Sun in the 2nd house (New York clock time)
March 20, 2000 (equinox) 2:04 am to 4:03 am
June 21, 2000 (solstice) 2:29 am to 3:59 am
September 22, 2000 (equinox) 2:49 am to 4:48 am
December 21, 2000 (solstice) 2:24 am to 4:52 am

The middle slot: between midnight and sunrise Placidus passes the Sun through houses 3, 2 and 1 in equal thirds, so the 2nd is second. June is on daylight saving time, and these four dates come from a single city.

Whole Sign changes the answer for some planets

Among planets in the Placidus 2nd, 49.1% remained in the 2nd under Whole Sign, 44.7% moved to the 3rd and 1.8% to the 1st. The Sun sat in the Placidus 2nd in 8.3% of charts, a shade under the even-split 8.33%.

Where your 2nd house is

Feed your date, place and exact time to a birth chart calculator. The 2nd house is the segment right after the 1st house, starting at the second edge. Should it be empty, read the sign on that edge and the position of its ruler.

The 3rd house comes next. For the sequence in which a whole chart is read, see how to read a birth chart.

Some questions about what you have and value

They are prompts, and none has a right answer.

  1. Which of your possessions would you miss least, and which most, and why?
  2. Where does your sense of worth come from on an ordinary day?
  3. What did you first learn to value, and from whom?

Questions people ask

Astrologers read the 2nd house for personal resources: what a person owns and earns, what they value, and in many guides their sense of worth. It is a succedent house and, in the natural order of the wheel, echoes Taurus, the second sign. It describes a theme for reflection and does not give financial guidance.

Guides split. Some, like Astrology Zone, keep it to earned income and possessions, and say self-worth belongs elsewhere. Others, like Numerologist.com and Wikipedia's summary of Greene, read it as values and self-worth as well. Both readings are beliefs, and neither is a rule.

Nothing is missing. In our sample of 21,025 charts at 40.71 N, 46.3% had no planet in the 2nd house under Placidus and 44.3% under Whole Sign. Astrologers read an empty house through the sign on its edge and the planet that rules that sign, wherever that planet sits.

The natural order pairs the 2nd house with Taurus, and two guides name Venus as the planet that goes with both. Sepharial, in 1910, wrote that Venus governs Taurus and Libra. In your own chart, the planet that matters most for this house is the ruler of the sign on its edge.

Sometimes. Of the planets we found in the Placidus 2nd house, 49.1% were also in the 2nd under Whole Sign and 44.7% had moved to the 3rd (21,025 charts, 40.71 N). A planet well away from a house edge stays put. Compare both systems in a chart calculator.

Astrologers also read the lunar nodes by house. See the North Node in the 2nd house, with the South Node in the house opposite.
