8th House in Astrology: Shared Resources, Depth and Change

The 8th house in astrology: what Sepharial and Alan Leo listed, how astrologers read it now, and our own figures on empty and crowded 8th houses.

Last updated September 30, 2026

The 8th house is the eighth segment of a birth chart, and astrologers read it for what is held in common: shared resources, trust, closeness and the changes that come with them. We cover what it stands for, what two early twentieth century texts said, and how often planets land in it in our own sample. It is all tradition, and none of it is a forecast for anyone.

Legacies and renewal in the early lists

Sepharial’s 1910 book Astrology: How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope opens the house with the end of a life and its aftermath, and follows it with “legacies and dowries”, which is the language of inherited and shared property. We leave the first part aside and keep the property. Alan Leo, in How to Judge a Nativity (1903), lists the same family of topics and then adds “re-generation or re-birth”, a phrase that points the house toward renewal.

That is the pattern modern astrologers have kept. The old lists were long and often stern, and the house has since been recast as a description of depth: what two people put into a common pot, and what changes when they do. Nothing in either text is a forecast, and this page does not read it as one.

Shared money, closeness and change in modern guides

Shared resources first

Guides widely describe the 8th house as the house of what is shared. Astrology Zone starts with joint financial matters and unearned income. Astrology.com lists inheritance, taxes, insurance and support from another, and Astrostyle calls it one of two money houses, the one that covers merged assets and money set aside for the long term. Numerologist.com adds the moment when a shared arrangement has to be settled between people. Wikipedia’s summary of Arroyo puts the weight on emotional depth and on the way close bonds change people.

Several of these guides also connect the house with sexuality, which is why “intimacy” is the word people search for. We keep to the general idea: this is the house astrologers look at for deep closeness, alongside the 7th house of partnership.

Change and renewal

A second theme comes up in guides widely read: the 8th house is described as the house of transformation. Astrology Zone lists new life chapters, rebirth and regeneration. Astrology.com says one can view such passages as growth and a new beginning. Numerologist.com reads the change as conversion into something that serves a larger cycle, and Wikipedia says Rudhyar sees the house as one of regeneration. So when astrologers speak of endings in this house, they usually mean the way one phase of life gives way to the next, not any event.

Held in common versus held alone: the 2nd house

Two pages set the 8th beside its opposite, the 2nd. Astrostyle files both under money, as its two money houses. Numerologist.com contrasts them directly: the 2nd is where you find what belongs to you alone, and the 8th is where you find what you hold with someone else. The 2nd house page has the other half.

Actors on a stage: a planet in the 8th

Astrostyle offers a general picture for any house: the planets are the actors, the houses the stages, and a planet in a house is like an actor on that set. Read that way, a planet in the 8th house is described in terms of shared and private matters, and this page gives no verdict on any planet.

Its place on the wheel and its Latin name

Third of the four succedent houses, it follows the angular 7th and echoes Scorpio. The numbering rule is the one behind Alan Leo’s 1903 advice to “pay special attention to the corresponding house” for a sign. Group and system details sit in the houses guide.

Wikipedia’s list gives its old Latin name as Mors, an old word for the end of a life, and summarizes the house as being about transformation, shared resources and intimacy. On the wheel it sits in the upper right, between the 7th and the 9th, since the houses from the 7th to the 12th lie above the horizon.

Emptiness in the 8th house: our sample

Our sample holds 21,025 charts computed for 40.71 N, one every 1 day and 61 minutes from 1950 to 2009, with the Sun, the Moon and Mercury to Pluto. The 8th house was bare in 48% under Placidus and 49.1% under Whole Sign, and 6.5% of Placidus charts put three or more bodies there. At 5.68 empty houses of 12 per chart, a bare 8th is an ordinary chart and not a gap.

Placidus width of the 8th house

Whole Sign gives 30 degrees. Placidus varies with latitude and always mirrors the 2nd. Its range over a complete turn of the sky, in degrees:

Latitude Narrowest Average Widest
The equator 27.6 30.0 32.6
Miami (25.8 N) 23.7 30.0 36.9
Los Angeles (34.05 N) 22.0 30.0 39.1
New York (40.71 N) 20.4 30.0 41.5
London (51.5 N) 16.8 30.0 47.7
60 N (Oslo, Helsinki) 11.9 30.0 57.8

The average is 30 at every latitude, and the swing grows northward: London’s 8th house runs from 16.8 to 47.7 degrees, and at 60 N from 11.9 to 57.8.

Mid-afternoon: the Sun in the 8th house

The Sun reaches this house after early afternoon. New York clock times under Placidus, on four days of 2000:

Day Sun in the 8th house (New York clock time)
March 20, 2000 (equinox) 2:04 pm to 4:03 pm
June 21, 2000 (solstice) 3:28 pm to 5:56 pm
September 22, 2000 (equinox) 2:49 pm to 4:48 pm
December 21, 2000 (solstice) 1:26 pm to 2:56 pm

Between noon and sunset Placidus runs the Sun through houses 9, 8 and 7, and the 8th is the middle of the three, each getting a third. That is why the windows are longest in June and shortest in December. June is on daylight saving time; four dates in one city are examples only.

Shifts between the two systems

Of the planets in the Placidus 8th, 43.1% were also in the 8th under Whole Sign, 47.2% were in the 9th and 1.7% in the 7th. The Sun was in the Placidus 8th in 8.28% of charts, close to the even-split 8.33%.

Finding the 8th house in your chart

Your birth date, place and exact time go into a birth chart calculator. The 8th house is the segment after the 7th, so it starts a house-width past the Descendant. If it is vacant, look at the sign on its edge and at where that sign’s ruler sits.

Next around the wheel is the 9th house, and how to read a birth chart sets out a reading order.

Questions about what is shared

Treat them as prompts, nothing more.

  1. What do you share with other people, whether it is space, money or trust, and how do you feel about how it is shared?
  2. When one chapter of your life closed, what made room for the next?
  3. Who knows things about you that few others do?

Questions people ask

It is the eighth of the twelve houses of a birth chart, read by astrologers for shared resources, intimacy and change. Guides describe joint finances, inheritance and deep closeness as its usual topics. It is a succedent house and, in the natural order of the wheel, echoes Scorpio, the eighth sign.

Guides most often name the 8th house. It is read for deep closeness and trust between people, and for what two lives hold in common, including shared money and property. Astrologers also read the 7th house for partnership, so the two are usually looked at together. Neither is a forecast about anyone's relationships.

It means no planet was in that part of the chart, which is ordinary. In our sample of 21,025 charts at 40.71 N, 48% had none in the 8th house under Placidus and 49.1% under Whole Sign. Astrologers read an empty house through its edge sign and that sign's ruler.

By the natural order the 8th house echoes Scorpio. Sepharial, in 1910, wrote that Mars governs Scorpio, and modern astrologers also assign Pluto to it. The planet that matters for your own 8th house is the ruler of the sign on its edge, which differs from chart to chart.

For many planets, yes. Of the planets we found in the Placidus 8th house, 43.1% were also in the 8th under Whole Sign, and 47.2% had moved to the 9th (21,025 charts, 40.71 N). A planet well inside the house stays put. Try both systems in a chart calculator.

Astrologers also read the lunar nodes by house. See the North Node in the 8th house, with the South Node in the house opposite.
