Moon sign meaning

Moon in Aquarius: The Independent, Humane Moon

The Moon in Aquarius in your birth chart: Alan Leo's 1899 broad, humanitarian Moon, the original streak modern astrologers see, and how to confirm yours.

A Moon in Aquarius means the Moon was passing through Aquarius, the eleventh sign, at the time you were born. This page is about that natal placement, the Moon sign in your birth chart, and not about today’s Moon, the Moon’s transit through Aquarius, or any Aquarius full moon. Astrologers commonly read the Moon sign as the emotional self: what you need, how you react, what settles you. With Aquarius, the tradition describes an emotional life with a wide lens, often more at ease with humanity in general than with a single tangled feeling. All of it is tradition and belief, offered for reflection and entertainment.

Moon in Aquarius: fixed air under Saturn

Aquarius is an air sign and a fixed one. Its traditional ruler, in Sepharial’s 1910 list, is Saturn: “Saturn governs Aquarius and Capricornus.” Air signs are the mental and social part of the zodiac; fixed signs hold steady. Saturn, the planet of structure in the old scheme, gives the sign a principled, deliberate quality. A Moon here, then, is described as feelings filtered through ideas and held to principles, steady once formed and not easily swayed. Its symbol, the Waterman, pours water out for others, an image some astrologers connect with the sign’s concern for the wider group.

Sepharial’s list gives Saturn two signs, Capricorn and Aquarius, and setting the Moon in each side by side is instructive. In Capricorn, the Saturn sign of earth, tradition describes feelings put to work through duty and effort. In Aquarius, the Saturn sign of air, it describes feelings put to principle: held to an idea of what is fair or right, and slow to bend once settled.

Alan Leo’s broad, humanitarian Aquarius Moon (1899)

In Astrology for All (1899), Alan Leo described the person with this Moon as “broad and humanitarian” in sympathy. The key word is broad: this is a Moon whose feeling reaches outward to people in general. His original sentence is written about “him”, which we set aside, since the trait belongs to anyone, and his chapter’s remarks on fortune and family are not repeated.

Patient and faithful: the Aquarius Sun

Alan Leo’s Aquarius Sun reads quite differently: “Aquarian individuals are determined, patient, quiet, unobtrusive and faithful.” That is a portrait of steady personal character, almost modest. Set against it, the Moon chapter is expansive, concerned with sympathy on a large scale. Astrologers would say the Sun describes who an Aquarian is at their center, and the Moon describes where their feelings naturally go, which for this sign is toward the many rather than the one.

Head first, heart close behind: the Aquarius Moon today

Two themes are shared by most of the modern pages we read on this placement, one of them by all four. Many astrologers describe the Aquarius Moon as unconventional and original, humanitarian but often from a certain distance, and uneasy with anything that fences it in. They also describe its emotional life as real but cerebral: feelings get reasoned through before they are allowed to register. At least one of those pages takes care to say that the Aquarius Moon does have feelings, which is worth repeating, because the placement is often shorthand for coldness.

Some astrologers build on this. In their reading an Aquarius Moon wants to stay its own person inside close bonds, valued for who it is rather than slotted into a part. It is nourished by friends, common convictions and work for a cause, and by uninterrupted time with its own thoughts. This Moon is described as the steady one when a friend’s life is in crisis and the unsure one when the crisis is its own, and some writers note that it can prefer unusual arrangements to the ones it inherited.

How to confirm an Aquarius Moon

The Moon takes only around 2.3 days to cross Aquarius, arriving from Capricorn and leaving for Pisces, so a single calendar date can carry two Moon signs. If you were born on one of those dates, your birth time is what separates them. Our Moon sign calculator finds the Moon’s position for the date, place and time you give it.

Aquarius Moons are common. Checking the Moon’s sign at noon UTC on each of 21,915 dates from 1950 through 2009, we found it in Aquarius on 8.3% of them, and no sign fell outside 8.28% to 8.37%. If the calculator shows a sign change on your birthday, read the Capricorn Moon and Pisces Moon pages as well.

Your Aquarius Moon in the big three

The Moon is one leg of the trio astrologers read first, together with the Sun and the rising sign; our Sun, Moon and rising article explains how they combine. An Aquarius Moon under a warm fire Sun is read by some astrologers as a cool, observing layer beneath an enthusiastic one, and under another air Sun as a mind-first emphasis throughout. If Aquarius is also your Ascendant, Alan Leo in 1903 described that rising sign as “refined, sympathetic, and humane”, a first impression in tune with the humanitarian Moon; see the Aquarius rising page. Questions for the Moon in Aquarius

  1. When a feeling turns into a theory in your head, what happens to the feeling itself?
  2. In the groups and causes you care about, where do you get to be looked after as well as useful?
  3. What does closeness look like when it still leaves you room to be entirely yourself?

These are prompts, not conclusions. Tradition sees in the Aquarius Moon a wide, humane sympathy; how that shows up in your own life is yours to notice.

Questions people ask

No. The Moon moves through Aquarius every month, just as it does every other sign. We counted its sign at noon UTC on 21,915 days from 1950 to 2009 and found Aquarius on 8.3% of them, with all twelve signs between 8.28% and 8.37%. Roughly one person in twelve has this Moon.

Astrologers describe an Aquarius Moon person as independent and original, with feelings approached through ideas first and a strong pull toward friendship and causes. Alan Leo in 1899 called this Moon broad and humanitarian in its sympathies. These are traditional descriptions for reflection; the rest of the chart shapes how they come through.

Because many astrologers read it as head first and heart second: a feeling is studied like an idea before it is allowed to sink in. One of those pages stresses that this does not mean an absence of feeling. Some astrologers add that goodwill here often reaches groups and causes more easily than it reaches the self.

In Alan Leo's 1899 book, the Aquarius Sun is determined, patient, quiet and faithful, a steady character, while the Aquarius Moon is broad and humanitarian in feeling. Modern astrologers keep the same split: the Sun as the self you work at being, the Moon as your emotional reflexes and needs.
