What the guides say about a 5 and a 9
The mirror
Seventh Life Path pictures a 9 who sees the 5’s love of freedom as irresponsible, and a 5 who finds the 9’s idealism superficial. Numerology.com says almost the same and compares the pair to oil and water, adding that the two have very little in common. Numerologist.com puts it as a question of scale: the 9’s natural operating frequency is large, taking in humanity and the long arc of things, while the 5 lives in this conversation and this person, right now. It adds that neither is especially motivated by the maintenance work of shared life, so that work tends not to happen by itself. Hans Decoz says the goal-oriented 8 and the idealistic 9 are unwilling to put up with a 5’s constant need for change.
A stretch, in most verdicts
Those same sources read the pair as a stretch. Numerologist.com says the classical sources mark the 5 and 9 as usually discordant. Decoz’s page for the 5 calls the 9 not favorable, and his page for the 9 says a 9 may want to steer clear of the erratic 5 in romance, on a list where the most favorable partners are the 1, 2, 3 and 6. Tsemrinpoche.com says a 5 and a 9 are likely to make better business associates than romantic partners.
If they are drawn together anyway
Seventh Life Path and Numerology.com share a footnote. When a 5 and a 9 are attracted to each other, both say, other numbers in the two charts are probably the reason. Both also say the pair succeeds only with compromise and diplomacy, and tsemrinpoche.com adds that they need to state their goals and their commitment levels.
The warmer notes
Some pages find real common ground. AskGanesha says both are constantly looking forward to new ventures, and that in business the pair is most likely to succeed. Numerologist.com says neither wants a quiet, uneventful life, and that the 5 is engaged with experience while the 9 is engaged with meaning. Tsemrinpoche.com says the 9’s compassion and the 5’s forward thinking can lead to many shared adventures.

A pair of random dates therefore forms this combination 2.47% of the time, about one in 41, in line with every other mixed pair, while a same-number pair comes up about one in 81.
